My kid just got an Ipod. We find out that you need 2000 or XP to download
songs. We have ME. I wasn't there when they bought it so didn;t get a chance
to read the box.

I guess there is no choice here but would anyone know why they skipped and
din't make it so you could use it??

And is ME a lemon that Microsoft wishes they newver would have put out?

It says I need SP4 added to 2000 or XP. For that it says that
NTDLL.DLL:strstr is missing.

Perhaps for the same reason air bags aren't an optional extra for those
still running a Model-T Ford. <g> Nothing to do with Win Me being a lemon
but instead because Win Me, like Win 98/98SE and Win 95 is built on the
Win9x kernel which is end of line with development of Win 9x systems
having ceased with the release of Win Me over five years ago..

Lots of recent software no longer supports Win Me and other older
operating systems, examples including Microsoft Office 2003, CorelDraw 12
and Adobe Acrobat 7 al of which require the user to be running either
Windows 2000 SP3 or better or XP or better.

I'm sorry not to be able to give you the answer you are looking for and a
magic cure for your problem. Perhaps you will find what you are looking
for using Google as others have certainly had the same problem before you.

Thats what I was looking for and thanks. I guess I've never understood how
they fit together.

So here's another question. If XP is built on a foundation of 2000 then
isn't ME built on 2000 as well? I'm sure I'm missing something but just want
to understand

You may use the IPod software with either 2000 with SP4, or just XP. It
seems like ME should be in the middle there somewhere but I guess it's not.

Windows Millennium (Win Me) has little or nothing to do with Windows 2000
other than both are from Microsoft. I've tried to set out a rough
chronology of the two Microsoft system lines over the past ten years and
what is on the horizon.

Systems based on the Win 9x kernel

Win 95 => Win95 OSR2 => Win 98 => Win 98SE => Win Me [End of Line]

Systems based on the NT kernel

NT3 => NT3.5 => NT4 => Win2K => XP => W2K3 Server ....
with to come ... {Codename Longhorn 2006/7?} ....
and then .... (Code name Blackcomb 2010/12+} ....

"geek" seems to have answered your query but as long as I'm typing...

WinME is more maligned than it should be; while I disagree with some of
the decisions M$ made, it's a viable, working OS.

As to why the iPod people "skipped" WinME? They didn't really, WinME is
officially a dead OS; might as well ask why the didn't make it for DOS.

Windows Millenium is the final product in the 9x OS kernel line that was
developed in-house by M$.

NT, 2000 & XP have a totally different base set of kernel programs even
though the GUI looks much the same; things written for 9x won't
necessarily run on NTx and vive-versa.

Of course there's also the element of marketing.

In addition to using Winamp with the Ipod plugin, take a look at
MediaMonkey. It also provides iPod synch support and runs on WinME.
