Just purchased a new LCD monitor. Certain menu text items are very hard to read.
I've been able to change many text properties to bold and this helps but I
cannot find a setting for the text in the tool bar. I'm talking about the text
that is directly under various icons in the toolbar for apps like IE or OE.
Oddly my previous LCD monitor of the same size was not nearly as bad as the new
monitor. Both were set to their native resolution of 1280x1024.
Thanks for any help.

Your suggestion changes the properties of the text under desktop icons. The text
I'm talking about shows up in various areas including the text under the icons
in Outlook Express ("Reply" "Forward" etc.) or the text on the IE toolbar...
"Back", "Search", "Favorites" etc. I can find no settings that change that text.
With my current (new Samsung) LCD monitor it looks like that text was scratched
in with a thin needle. Very thin lines and very jagged.

Yes, I know it changes desktop icon text. It also changes text under
the icons in IE "Back", "Search", "Favorites" etc as I can clearly see
when I change it. It will change a lot of Windows text.

Please try it.

My apologies... It sure does change the text I am referring to. And it would
solve my problem except that I notice now that in OE all messages subject lines
are bold. With email that's OK because I can tell what has been read by the
envelope icon. But in the OE newsreader section all messages are also bold
whether read or not. The small icon in front of message is different for read /
unread / messages but it's pretty subtle.
But you are indeed correct. I'll see if I can get used to the all bold message
subjects.

Yes, I see the problem in OE.
I don't use OE in newsgroups and don't see any obvious way around the
read v. unread messages, but try an OE group and see if they can help.

OE6 newsgroups.

I know what you are talking about, it came as a bit of a shock, when I
purchased a new LCD monitor. All text was very fine, and faint, and hard to
read.

Is there a setting on your monitor menu, (the physical buttons on your
monitor) to alter the sharpness?

I changed the sharpness on mine from 4 to 2, and text is much more readable
now!

When you said "very fine and faint" I knew you knew what I was talking about.
And guess what? Your suggestion fixes my problem. I can't believe it was that
simple. One thing that threw me was that I had an LCD 17" monitor prior to the
new 17" I bought 2 days ago and the readability problem was not nearly as bad. I
even considered returning this Samsung monitor. So it looks like the Samsung has
the ability for a sharper picture. If I were using WinXP I could possibly leave
it in a sharper setting and use the XP cleartype.
Thank you so much for the answer.

It's simple when you know how!

I, too, was on the verge of taking the new monitor back, as
unfit for purpose, (which it was, using the default settings),
but I stumbled across the 'sharpness' setting in the menu,
(there is no mention of what this does, in the manual).

Anyway, glad to have been able to help.
