I finally eliminated all the Symantec products from my
hard drive, but whennever I boot up I still get the Go
Back bar, followed by a note that the GoBack shortcut does
not refer to anything on my hard drive. What shortcut?
It's not on my desktop. I trashed that. How can I
finally, once and for all, get rid of this? Thanks.

Symantec products will leave tons of detritus in the Registry. As far as
the shortcut, you should be able to right click and select "Delete."

In re: to the Reg......you will need to run a good Reg cleaner, i.e. jv16
Power Tools or equivalent (just make sure it creates a restorable backup!),
and dispose of anything Symantec related. Even then, to get rid of the
rest, you will need to search your hard drive for things like Live Update,
LU, Symantec, Norton, System Works, Live Reg and do the same with Reg Edit.
If you are not familiar with using Reg Edit, leave it alone! Just make sure
you create a backup of the Registry before the 'house cleaning" job.

I deleted all references to Symantec and Norton in both the registry and
folders, files, etc. I searched for the things you named both in
folders/files and registry and found nothing left. I tried to re-download
Go Back so I can remove it from the Add/Remove utility, but got the message
that it couldn't download it because "cannot create GoBackIO.BIN - this file
is used for Go Back History." I also searched for GoBack History with no
luck. I have Registry Mechanic.

After I posted the last message, I realized all I had to do was search for
"GOBACKI0.BIN" folder and delete it. I could not find it exactly as I
typed, so I searched for ".bin" and found a GoBack10.bin folder, which was
too large for my recycle bin, so I permanently deleted it. I believe this
will have solved my problem.

Well, that didn't work. Apparently that got rid of the history, but the bar
still comes on. However, I did manage to get rid of the error message by
deleting something in the registry.

Obviously, there are still some entries yet discovered. Just for grins (I
know you have probably already done this, but.......), if this 'bar' is part
of your Windows toolbar, have you looked at View, Toolbars, Customize to see
if you can remove it from there?? I realize this will just get it off of
your toolbar. Also, consider looking in MSCONFIG, Startup tab to see if
there is anything remaining for Go Back or any associated files. If so,
uncheck them and you should see the Command path on the same line....maybe
give you a clue as to what is still in there.
I did a search on Google and Groups regarding the uninstall.....the only
thing I found was a Symantec KB article and the process involved using the
original installation disk....which I don't think you have since you
mentioned dl'ding it.
Maybe someone in here is familiar with this product and can guide you
further, I am about out of ideas. Sorry I could not have been of more help.

One of the problems (of which there are many) with GoBack is that a simple
Uninstall routine doesn't work - try this

Boot with a ME floppy (and it MUST be an ME floppy!!), and at the A:\>
prompt type

SYS C:

See if that kills GoBack

The reason is simple - GoBack changes the MBR, so that it is installed
BEFORE the operating system on boot. IIRC, doing the above resets the MBR to
normal, an GoBack can then be removed effectively.
