If a music CD is recorded in 'protected' format into the
MP7 Library in ME, is it possible to remove
its 'protection' at a later date? If so, how? Thanks.

Digital Rights Management. No, you can't remove the protection. What you
have to do is configure WMP not to Copy Protect recordings. If you copy
protect a recording, then lose your licences (iirc), you can reactivate a
few times online, thereafter you're stuffed. DRM is a piece of something
no-one wants a piece of.

There are techniques for using one's sound card to play and capture
the audio and save it to an mp3 format (sans DRM protection).

Goggle for the words: soundcard drm remove protection. Tunebite or
audiograbber are the software names I seem to remember. It requires a
full duplex sound card - one that can record and play at the same time
(common enough).

The downside is that there may be some fidelity lost and you have to
play the entire collection you wish to convert.

The RIAA is after sound card manufacturers to install a watermarking
"feature" to close this loophole. I don't know how feasible that idea
is, seems to me it would decrease fidelity and be easy enough to
circumvent.

The best way is "Just say NO!" Don't use Microfarts WMP and stick to
unprotected formats. There have been security issues with WMP DRM
also.

Some folks that claim one of MS' own development tools can be used to
circumvent the DRM protection - but I'm not up on it or interested in
it. I keep DRM formats off my system.

There is a technique that utilizes a method that "burns" the file as
an image (puts a virtual CD on the hard drive) then allows you to pick
the tracks to extract.

"The process described in this document is not illegal because you can
only perform the operation on music that can be opened by your own
Windows Media Player software. If you can't open the file because it
wasn't bought for use on your computer, you can't remove the DRM."

Something called Total Recorder is supposed to be able to record
anything that can be played through the soundcard . I've used this
program in the past and it worked very well.

different sound formats to WAV format, record from any sound card

The default setting for recording music in my ME WMP7 was
a tick in the DRM box. As a result all my recorded music
became protected. I subsequently discovered that by
removing the tick all new recordings were unprotected. My
original question was to find a way to unprotect the
earlier protected music. I now understand that it cant be
done.
The reason I needed it was because I couldnt burn music
direct from WMP and so needed to change the format from
wma to wav and burn CDs thru Nero. I cannot convert
Protected mwa music into wav but I can with unprotected
music. Complicated isnt it. Sorry about that.
