I am thinking of a
AMD 64 3200+
2gig corsair 3200 Ram
Sapphire x800xl
80GB Maxtor HDD
Gigabyte 939 PC3200 Motherboard
X-Blade case with 450W PSU
Rocket Processor Cooling fan and heatsink
3 Neon Blue Cooling case fans

I would like to know if this system will be ok for the latest games i
think i will be able to run on high settings at 1600 1200 at great fps
in most games. I am buyin an ati x800xl as i plan to upgade to
crossfire in a year of so and will also be upgrading the processer in
a year or so.

Will this system run most games on high.
I only have a budget of about £800 and this is the best i can do.

Thanks

Jamie

Hey consider this RAM: great bank/buck ratio...

I am now a big Patriot RAM fan. :)

Why not forget about the lights and re- use your current case to spend cash
on hardware? You should try to include one of the new creative x-fi cards,
my battlefield 2 runs far better with it.

It shouldn't help much unless contrasted with some software
based Sensaura surround alternative. Buying a cheap
creative card with hardware EAX then reusing the saved $ on
a faster video card or CPU would be a higher performance
gain. If one needs the X-Fi's additional features that is
another story but general purpose gaming, shouldn't.

But in fact, Battlefield 2 requires more than 1 GB of RAM, and
that's a current game. You should have suggested leaving an open
memory slot.

You mean that it does better with more memory, but more than
1GB not required.

Quoted system requirements aren't always realistic.

Of course not, but then 1GB is double that.
If we want "ideal", then of course it's pointless to just
mention memory. Ideally we're talking top of the line CPU,
video card, etc, and again upgrading those at every
opportunity. Yes 2GB of memory is better than 1 at BF2, but
it definitely does not "require" it.

I dont have a current case and like i said will b upgrading to a
crossfire motherboard and another x800 oe x850 card l8er as you dont
have to use the same cards also will b getting a new processor in a
year or so so will this system do for now?

If I were buying a hard disk drive for gaming, I would consider
buying a 10,000 rpm 37 GB drive like this one.

That actually is big enough for the average person. FWIW, 90% of the PC
users I know are not using more that 20 Gigs of their drive.

Only PPL who download lots of large files (porn) really need more room,
IMHO.

::cue:: (long list of ppl who claim they have a legitimate non-porn need
for 400 G of HD space)

::pre-emptive shrug of pure "who-cares-what-you-do-with-your-PC::

I'm not judging anybody. I'm not.

A little shortsighted. There's a lot of TV episodes and pilots for dl
long before and after these are shown on commercial TV, also some DVDs.
Really good for catching missed episodes.

More to the point MS FS2004 with all the 3rd party scenery and aircraft
available eats HD space for breakfast. Add a couple big packages
like Office. Nero or big games like Far Cry and he's buying another HD the
week after he gets the PC running.

For a real gamer HD space trumps rpm. 37Gb will not be enough

Long, long ago I too scoffed at people who craved big HD, then I
started playing Doom.

My don't we have money. The thing is in a year or so they'll be pushing
dual core cpus so will the Gigabyte work with dual core or run with AMD
XP4000?

I'd go for the new Antec P180 case which comes with all the fans you'll
need. The case is cool and quiet. Check it out at www.antec.com and
read the reviews.

1Gb ram is good, 2gb not that important.

80Gb HD is too small, for a few £ more 160 or larger. You'll be
glad you've gone to a larger size. Easier to defrag, more options.

TV episodes typically have nothing to do with gaming.

I have Flight Simulator 2004, and a 3 Mbs Internet connection.
Having all of the third-party scenario and aircraft installed
would be foolish.

> Add a couple big packages like Office.

Office typically has nothing to do with gaming.

And the cow jumped over the moon.

> For a real gamer HD space trumps rpm. 37Gb will not be enough

I am a really real gamer. My windows partition is 20 GB. I have
been happily gaming for weeks and currently have 10.7 GB free.

Apparently you are not familiar with loading huge programs or
scenarios into memory. The fact that Battlefield 2 runs well on
about 1.5 GB of RAM should tell you something about its hard disk
speed requirements. Load times are a common problem for real
gamers.

Then there is the possibility of having two hard disk drives if
necessary. I have two hard disk drives in my system. Having two
hard disk drives is good anyway since it makes for easy backups
(in addition to removable media backups). The size 37 GB is more
than enough for a typical Windows installation. Downloaded stuff
can be kept on another hard disk drive if necessary.
