Before I order parts for this system, anyone have any comments on
this? Its my first time building a machine. Any newbie mistakes I'm
making?

This will be my primary home machine replacing an old gateway2000
500MHz. Will do some photoshop and graphics but not everyday. Also
microsoft office, emailing etc. No gaming to speak of.

Would like the system to be quiet. Convenient ports in front to
connect camera or other devices.

Will this require an additional inlet fan in the front of the case? I
believe it comes with rear fan only.

This graphics card ok? Its on the low end of the price range. What
shortcoming will I notice from this vid card?

Will pickup mouse and monitor from my parts box, may also pull
internal zip drive from exhisting system.

that this case; don't know if it's all black cases (I still use beige);

Are you planning on overclocking? The reason I ask is that Abit boards are
the darling of hard core overclockers. However, you opt for inexpensive RAM
that will probably, but not necessarily, limit your overclocking. You might
reconsider and spring for better RAM if you plan to overclock.

Good price, but sub-par performer. Thanksgiving day, get your local
newspaper and look through the advertisements for Best Buy, Circuit City,
CompUSA and others for unbelievable deals after rebates for early shoppers
on Friday morning. My brother got an ATi Radeon 9600 last year for $60
after rebates, which is a much better card than a 9200SE.

If you sprung for an Athlon 64 with 1MB cache, it'll be quite a bit faster.
According to AMD, this particular processor should be with a 1MB cache, but
make sure you get it. You won't regret it.

I just want to say something here... It's one thing to build a machine on a
budget. It's another to be so cheap about it that your system is outdated
as soon as you build it.

The keyboard you selected is probably only worth the $14 you'll pay for it.
If you want to avoid paying for extras like media buttons and such,
Microsoft and Logitech make keyboards that will fill the bill and are of
much higher quality, often, than those budget keyboards.

The same goes for everything else. I know New Egg is a very good place to
get parts, but there are others too, particularly ZipZoomFly, where I order
the majority of my stuff. If you shop around carefully, you can get much
better parts and still keep the price very reasonable. I really think you
can do better than this system on such a limited budget.

Haven't done a whole lot of research into video cards, guess I'll need
to read up on them more.

Was considering the $5 keyboards they have... not really... but I can
always use keyboard from exhisting system if this isn't satisfactory.
Not sure exactly what determines a good keyboard. I don't type 100wpm
and am not gaming so it seems like anything with keys should be
sufficient?

Will definitly look this list over and consider it. Haven't looked at
ZZF either. Will check them out.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look this over. I didn't
realize when I started looking into this just how much time it would
take to read up on all of the different components. Gets to the point
of new info overload, so thanks for the nudge in the right direction.

I don't see any problems. I might make different choices in some cases
but there is nothing wrong with your choices. One of the posts
recommended a motherboard and video card combination that are
incompatible. Be careful with the recommendations and make sure they are
compatible with each other and are consistant with the goal you have.

Sound like you don't upgrade very often so don't be afraid to spend a
little extra (go for a 16x dual layer DVD burner like the NEC3500
instead of the 8x single layer burner you chose).

None, cards come in a variety of flavors to fit the budgets of gamers.
If you don't game and don't need a specialized card, the 9200SE will
serve as well as any.

Yes, there is, since the user just might get into gaming sometime later. No
reason to go overboard, but a somewhat better card for just a few mor bucks
should do fine.

A 5700 is about 2.5x the cost of a 5200. Maybe a few bucks to you but
proportionally a waste of money to a non-gamer. The 5700 is marginal for
gaming now, below par IMO. If the OP does get into gaming later, he would
be better off waiting to buy a gaming card when he needs it.

To each his own, but I'd rather spend a little more on a nicer card, knowing
it'll cover any needs I may have in the forseeable future, than to purchase
for the now only to possibly spend more money later.

I understand your, and others, point because I knew this Linux computer
wasn't going to be a gaming machine, so I put in an FX5200 in it. I game on
my Windows machine and spent plenty for the Ti4600 card that was the
latest/greatest at the time of purchase.

Besides, I never said to buy the 5700 card and you can get better bargains
than you claim on that card. I guarantee the day after Thanksgiving, Best
Buy has a rediculous deal on a much better graphics card for early
shoppers. My brother bought a Radeon 9600 card just last year for $60 after
rebates. It was a steal...
