Hello all,

currently using Ipaq H5550 and have been considering a GPS option. I have
downloaded the Tomtom demo programme from their site and am quite impressed.
I am looking at using the GPS on both car and motorbike......anyone have any
opinions on the best option to go for based on user experience (I'm in the
UK if that makes any difference) and what sort of prices we are looking at ?

I think "which is the best" is just personal choice. I've used both TomTom
and NavMan and I find TomTom far better. I prefer the interface generally,
and being able to add my own Points Of Interest maps is great.

I'm not a motorbiker, but I'd think very carefully before having a two unit
option (and both expensive not weather proof units) on a motorbike
(presumably in all weather). Have you considered something like a Magellan
Sports Track Pro loaded with DirectRoute Europe?

I have a 2210, and tom tom (which is the best I've tried) and I'm using a
haicom gps card (£95). Works fantastically. You need to bear in mind that
without a power cable the ipaq will switch off if untouched after 5 mins
though. not a problem in a car, but might be on a bike

An option you may want to consider is an Ipaq GPS jacket. I have a 5450 and
I'm looking at that option at present.

Search for Emtac at www.expansys.com. They are doing some good package
deals - CoPilot Live 5 has just been released and that's my target at the
moment.

Best site for ideas and reviews is www.pocketgps.co.uk.

For a bike you are probably safer getting a real GPS unit, they are robust
and waterproof. Try looking at those on the Garmin or Magellan sites. You
can basic units like an etrex, and also connect it to your pda in the car,
or get a unit with built in maps. It's an expensive set to break because of
a drop/rain/muck.......

that can be adjusted in the settings of the 2210. You can even switch the
auto-closedown completely off if you wish so.

I don't know by heart if the 5550 has built in Bluetooth, but if so you
also may consider a combination of a good nav-programm with a BT GPS
receiver. In that way you can simply slip the GPS module in your pocket
and mount the PPC in a water- and shockproof casing on the bike. With
some inventivity you might even be able to connect the 5550 to the
electrical system of your bike for powersupply....

I know several people who use Tomtom and are satisfied with it, though
they regard the limitations of TT to work bordercrossing as a
disadvantage, although not really serious.

I myself use Alturion. Which offers (in my opinion) as big advantage that
when buying that one, you get a nav-program of high specs for the PPC AND
one for a desktop or laptop at teh same time. Which enables you to
comfortably set out a route to travel behind your desk, and when you're
ready just export the route and the mapdata needed for the route to your
5550.
But in the mean time it still is possible to set up a route completely in
the PPC as well!!
It also offers POI's, street- and adress navigation all over Europe,
traffic information (when connected to the internet, e.g. through BT and
a cell phone), audio information etcetera etcetera. And for a price that
is abt the same as for TT.
