Hi,

I was wondering if people would look at the spec on the PC which can be
found at the following link.
http://www.savastore.com/productin [...] 655&pid=44

I would like opinoins on the spec. For example if I purchase this machine am
I going to be able to run todays games such as Doom 3 and Halflife 2 with
all thge settings maxed out and still get a decent FPS.

Also what about the next generation of games?

Thought please?

Get a single 7800GT instead of 2x6800GT, also get a single 1gig dimm, or
2x1gig. The rest is fine. I'd get a logitech G5 or G7 Laser mouse.

In non-SMP games, which is probably 99% of current games, an Athlon 64
X2 4200+ will perform the same as an Athlon 64 3500+. Both operate at
2.2GHz and have 512KB L2 cache.

Your proposed system will perform a little slower than the 6800 GT SLI
setup in the following review. The test system has an Athlon 64 4000+
and the Corsair RAM is probably running at tighter timings than than the
*branded memory* in your system could handle.

The Doom3 and Half-Life 2 engines are predicted to be the basis of many
games for the near future. It's not certain how long we have to wait
for the *next generation* of games, but it's 100% certain that your
proposed system won't run the *next generation* at an acceptable FPS on
the very highest settings of the most demanding games.

Stay well away from Savastore / Watford, My friend just had a
complete nightmare with them.

He ordered a £1000 pc with an Antec Sonata (piano black) case, it
took five weeks when they quoted 3 - 6 days at point of order.
The case arrived with 9 large scratches on it, covered in greasy
fingerprints, and he refused to accept it, cancelled the order and
asked for a refund, thinking that if the case was in that
condition the internals were probably as bad.

When we collected (and returned) the system from the Luton store
there where queues of people bringing stuff back, the shop is a
complete dump both inside and out - don't take any notice of the
nice pictures in their adverts they are probably 5 years old.

He paid by credit card so had some protection, but it still took
32 days, numerous emails, 27 phone calls and 4 recorded delivery
letters to get the money refunded to his card. They lied
repeatedly and were abusive to him on the phone on more than one
occasion.

I feel bad because I told him to use Watford, I'd used them for
bits and pieces in the past without a problem, but never used them
for a full system. Be warned that if anything goes wrong you will
be in for a very bad time, there are horror stories all over the
internet, but like I said I never had any problems the few times I
used them.

In the end we put a better system together from parts, for the
same price and I built it for him, (to make up for recommending
them).

Thanks for the advice Apollo,

I have purchased two complete systems from them and many other smaller items
over the last couple of years and had no problems so far. I normally go to
the shop in Luton and collect to avoid any damage in transit issues. So far
so good. I guess you and your friend must have been really unlucky.

Good luck in th future.

Yes. Sort of. Maybe. Nice CPU, nice Vid setup, decent HDD. But too many
components are unknown on this setup.

The first thing that jumps out at me is the power supply. 380W doesn't seem
adequate, certainly not with 2 cards each needing a separate molex
connector. The options list a 525W PSU at no extra charge, but if it's
free, why isn't it listed in the "Product Details"?

And second, a single 7800 GTX will often outperform a 6800 Ultra SLI setup.
In fact, there are some games that even a single ATI X850XT PE will
outperform a 6800 SLI setup.

Also, what speed is the memory? 2-2-2-5 1T is much better than 3-3-3-8 2T,
but this system just says "branded" memory. What the hell is that?

Also, the ad seems to ooze slime and deceit, like saying "Ultra-Fast SATA
(150 Mbps)", "Fast 100Mbit Ethernet", and "400Mbps IEEE1394 Firewire".

All SATA is 150 Mbps, and it isn't all that much faster than ATA100 or
ATA133. In fact, a RAID 0 ATA setup would probably outperform SATA. And
100Mbit Ethernet is the standard. Anything less would be an insult. And
all Firewire is 400Mbps, so repeating it just to see the numbers seems a bit
deceptive.

Now, had they said "Ultra-Fast SCSI (15,000 RPM)" with "Fast GB Ethernet",
those adjectives would be more appropriate. Here it seems they're just
trying to dazzle the uninformed.

And how much are all those "optional" components going to cost? No
keyboard, no mouse, no monitor, no speakers. The keyboard and mouse options
are pathetic. No true gamer would have any of those touching his/her
system. And none of the monitors are any good for gaming. Either get a
high-end 21"+ CRT or a better LCD with faster response times
(www.viewsonic.com). The speakers are merely adequate (6.1 and 7.1 are no
better than 5.1 unless your room is almost perfectly set up). Those 4
components are generally considered important in a "gamer", but will easily
set you back another $600-$1000 US (don't know the conversion rate) for
"game-worthy" hardware.

Just build your own.

> Also what about the next generation of games?

Since none of us can see the future, then any answer is pure speculation.
Even 18 months ago, 128MB was considered enough, but in 3 years, 512MB vid
cards will be the standard, with 1 GB cards out there as well.

need such as a decent speaker setup and 8ms response 19" LCD monitor.

Thanks

Do yourself a favour, and follow Apollo's advice
Do some homework and build yourself a system.

The advantages are too numerous to list, everything is 1 or 3 years warranty
anyway, and if an electronic component hasn't gone in the first month or so
its unlikely to do so, does happen but rarely.
That system is wrong for you, you could cut your budget substantially, by
building the right spec machine for you, and nobody knows that better than
you, and you'll also know better if you do a bit of homework.
Any problems and you'll know your machine intimately. And ALL the help you
need is here in newsgroups, and on the web.
just a couple of points.
use a quality mobo, and power supply, they're the foundation.
Don't go with dual core for games.
Run one 7800 in a sli board THEN ya can bung another in in a couple of years
time, when you'll need it and it will also be cheaper.
