I want to know if anyone has come up with a workaround, patch, or hack to
disable usb charging on a Toshiba E800 through the USB host cable to an
external HDD. I would think that a registery edit would be the key.
Problem is that I have an external HDD. When it is connected to AC power all
is fine. When it is powered by its internal battery, the e800 comes up with
the message 'device over current' and disengages the HDD. This is because
the e800 is trying to trickle charge the HDD's battery via the USB cable.
Can anyone suggest a solution? As far as I am aware, there is not a separate
wire in the USB cable that carries the power.

Use a USB HUB and put another device on the hub first (like a mouse),
that will drain the power, it might be a solution to see if thats the
problem, if you already have a hub and mouse to hand.

There is a separate wire for 5V. Not clear what other grief would
be caused by cutting it.
