Whenever I plug in my speakers Windows XP installs a "C-Media AC97 Audio
Device." I then get an error that says "the device was not installed properly
and may not work correctly," which of course it doesn't. I even went out and
bought new speakers and still end up with the same problem. The old speakers
are made by Altec Lansing model # avs300 and the new ones are made by
Logitech model # x-230. Neither of these came with their own drivers and I
haven't been able to find any drivers online. I've also tried manually
installing the new hardware but neither one is on the list. This is really
driving me nuts because if I leave the faulty driver installed my computer
will randomly restart! Any ideas on what I could try to get some sound would
be greatly appreciated!

An AC97 device is a sound chip built into your motherboard. Windows installs
the driver for that device at startup.

When you correctly install a sound card, the AC97 device is automatically
disabled. In older computers, you had to disable the device manually in the
BIOS.

External speakers do not normally have drivers to be installed, unless they
require a USB connection.

You sound card (C-Media AC97) drivers are not coorectly installed. Check on
your motherboard driver Cd or download the latest version from the
motherboard manufacturer

Something tells me that C-Media may be a Creative SoundBlaster audio card
(Creative Media?)

If you have a Creative SoundBlaster Audio card on your computer, go to
http://us.creative.com and look in their support section. Find your Audio
card in the listings and download the appropriate drivers.

I would also suggest dowloading the "Uni-pak" which includes all optional
components for the audio card for best quality.

Wow, thanks! All it took was a reinstall of the driver from my motherboard CD.
