Is anyone successfully running Windows 98 SE on a Tyan S2466 board?
More specifically, has anyone managed to get the drivers for the
integrated 3Com 3C920 NIC installed & working properly in Win 98?
I've got a multi-boot system with Win 98, Win 2K & Win XP. Both Win
2K & XP install the drivers correctly & run fine. I do most of my
work in 2K or XP, but I need a 98 environment to support a couple of
oldish Access applications, so any help on getting this NIC working
properly would be greatly appreciated.

Yes to both questions.

When you look in the device manager in windows 2000 and look at the network
adapters you see it says

3Com 3c920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (3C905-TX Compatible)

So what I did was go to 3com website and downloaded the drivers for the 3Com
3c905-TX-M and that worked for me. The file you need is 3c90x1.exe which is
a self extracting file. So after you download it you have to run it and it
will extract the files for you then from there you just install like you
would any other device.

Forgot to include link and some other info.

Its been awhile since I installed the driver for that card in windows 98 so
I did an update driver to see what would happen and you need your windows
98SE disk to complete the installation it will ask for it.

I also have a ? for you since you are running windows 98SE on the tyan
s2466. I too have set up a multi-boot system and use windows 98SE, windows
2000, window XP, and Linux on my machine. My problem is whenever I boot
into windows 98SE the volume on my sound card is turned way up and I have to
change the volume down to a manageable level everytime. The soundcard I
have is a sound Blaster Audigy. Any help or suggestion would be greatly
appreciated. Do you know of any programs that could run at startup and
automatically change the volume level.

Another thing I noticed after checking into the device manager while under
windows 98SE there was a listing for other devices and in that list were
about 5 unknown devices so I removed them but haven't yet rebooted back into
windows 98SE to see if they reappear. Do you have something similar in your
device manager while running in windows 98SE?

Hi Eric,
TVM for the info. I've been busy, so it's taken me a while to get
back to this. I've tried the driver you suggest from the 3Com web
site, but couldn't get that to work either i'm afraid. Can't help
with the sound card problem as I havent got as far as installing one
yet, sorry. I did have a couple of unknown devices after the initial
install of Win98SE, but these were sorted out by installing the
appropriate AMD chipset drivers. The machine is bare ATM with only a
graphics card plugged in, as I tend to install the PCI devices one at
a time after the installing the OS and any required chipset drivers.

I'm having another problem with this board though, I can't get it to
run reliably at 266 MHz FSB. I've posted this problem in a new
thread.

In what way didn't it work? If you just downloaded the file and clicked on
the 3c90x1.exe file all that would do is extract the files and not install
the drivers. After doing that you would go to the device manager in windows
and choose the network card and then update the driver from there.
