Anybody have any ideas what to do? Any USB device I plug into my K8NS-939
motherboard is recognized in the WinXP SP2 toolbar, but does not show up in
Windows Explorer or My Computer or any other way I've tried. The computer
administration panel recognizes them as storage devices and there is no
hardware issues reported by Device Manager.

I do not know where to go from here. The system BIOS is still original,
dates back to last November.

Please help if you can,

Your question is only half clear, with respect. Are these flash devices you
want to see as drives? What exactly do you see in the Device Manager panel?

For a flash memory "disk" device you should have a "generic USB [flash type
eg SD] Reader USB device" showing under the "Disk drives" hardware catagory,
and under "Storage Volumes" will be a "Generic Volume" that coreesponds. The
"disk" will also show in "Disk Management" panel.

For other USB device types there are many possibilities for which you will
need to provide the group with more details of the hardware involved, etc.

Only storage devices that are already formatted/partitioned will be seen,
in the locations you mention. Assuming these are something like HD
devices, then the 'answer', is 'control panel', 'administrative tools',
'computer management', 'disk management'. This should list all storage
devices in the right hand pane. Here you can partition a disk, create a
drive letter for the partition, and format it. Once this is done, this
partition will then become visible in the explorer type windows.

Ian,

One of the devices is a SANDisk mini cruzer 512mb. Worked just fine on the
previous computer with win2k pro. The other device is an Olympus C-60Z
camera. Also worked fine with the previous motherboard operating system
combo (previous mobo was a SOYO TISU).

The issue is that in the explorer toolbar (bottom of your desktop) the
devices get recognized. In the Device Manager the devices also get
recognized. However I cannot get to the files on these devices, since they
do not show up as removable drives either in Windows Explorer or My
Computer.

That is where I am stuck.

I have managed to figure out what the problem was with your help. I have
mapped my other computer's drives to this one in a consecutive alphabetical
fashion. On this new one my last drive letter was "J". The other computer's
C drive I have managed to map as "K" and so on, consecutively. When I got to
the area you told me to go to, my Cruzer mini drive showed us as present and
healthy. When I right-clicked on the area where this drive was shown, the
pop-up had the option to "Open" or "Explore". When I tried open, I ended up
with the mapped "K" drive, that is my other computer's C drive. So I
realized I had to disconnect it.

After I disconnected that drive, the Cruzer minidisk just poped up in
Explorer and the files are accessible.

I should call this a Windows "feature". It is very stupid, because there are
no instruction about this restriction. I wonder if you knew that.

I wouldn't have thought of that, but can't you work around it by changing
some of the drive letters?

At least you have found what the problem is!.
There are some other 'nice ones' in this area. If a disk drive, has a NTFS
partition (instead of a FAT partition), and is not present during 'boot',
it won't be assigned a drive letter, when attached to the computer, till
you go into disk manager, and assign it a letter. This will then be
forgotten on the next reboot. Hence if you have one of the little 'USB
powered' drives, that don't start up till a couple of seconds after the
machine starts to boot, and format it NTFS, these are not seen in
explorer, unless you assign it a letter every time you boot the
machine!....
I have suffered from this on two drives (a Lacie, and a Maxtor).
WXP, does still have some annoyances, that can be really 'strange'...
Have you tried assigning it a different drive letter, to see if this then
allows the other device to be accepted at the same time?.

Thanks for the extra tips, they will come handy one day. Yes, I have
remapped my second computer's drives to leave one gap in the alphabet, so my
USB devices are happy and I am happy.
