I have an IPAQ 3870 with an SD card and a Sony DSC-V1 camera with a Memory
Stick. Is there any way to copy files from the camera to the IPAQ without
having to use a computer or USB hub? I'd like to do the transfer "in the
field", away from a computer. Does anybody make a battery powered USB hub
and would that do the job?? Is there an adapter that would allow me to put
the memory card into the Ipaq??

Don't tell me the obvious - I should have bought a camera with an SD card in
it. :-) That would have made sense and required logic and forethought.

You could get a CF sleeve for the iPAQ and use the Memorystick/CF
adapter at http://www.card-media.co.uk/Memory+Stick+Adapters.htm

I've not seen a MS/SD adapter. I think both slots are too small to
accommodate it.

There are the portable camera card backup devices with a hard disk in them.
Most handle multiple card types so you could move between them.

OK, ;-) but that has been the primary reason that I have not purchased
one of the many (otherwise) good sony cameras.

You actually have one of the few devices that _may_ offer a solution...
specifically there are pcmcia adapters that accept SD, Smartmedia and
Memory sticks that should work with the 38xx series using an Ipaq pcmcia
sleeve.

afaik, there is no other direct way to convert to SD format or to
transfer the files using a cable.

ok - different approach, noticed today that Wal-Mart has a memory stick to
SD adapter, in other words it enables you to use SD cards in your Sony.
you could use this to convert the camera to SD instead of the other way
around.

Thanks to all that answered!! I went out and purchased the pcmcia adapter
and, with my expansion pack, it did the trick. The walmart adapter sounds
interesting but, for me, the pcmcia looks like the long term solution.

I thought about not getting the Sony camera because of the memory stick
concern but it has too many features to pass up. Bought the DSC-V1 to
replace my antique Canon A-1. The V1 has pretty much every feature the A1
has, but has several advantages due to the digital format. Now if I could
mount my Canon lenses on the Sony........ :-)

Thanks in turn for the confirmation that the pcmcia/memstick card works
in the ipaq... knew it did on the PC, but have never seen a post that
anyone had used it with a sleeve.

Would like more information on this... have been looking and googling
and yet to find one.

Two points...

SD's are larger (wider) than Memsticks so they would have to be external.

There is a Memstick to Memstick pro adapter and I wonder if the poster
was perhaps referring to this adapter?

One more note on the PCMCIA media reading (MR) card - when the MR Card is in
the expansion pack (EP) without storage media (memory stick, SD, etc.) in
it, the Ipaq does some really weird things, e.g., bringing up the Tasks list
lasts about 1/2 second, it brings up a data entry keyboard for 1/2 second,
then goes back to the home screen. I've seen it turn off the Ipaq when
trying to do something and if you get file explorer (FE) up, FE won't read
the other storage card in my dual EP. Adding a spare memory stick to the MR
card eliminates all the problems and the Ipaq works as normal. Weird, but I
can live with it. Guess I get to store my spare Memory Stick in the PCMCIA
card.

Anyway, it's worth the effort to be able to move files around away from a
computer.

I have tried an adaptor to sd with my hp 5555 with sleeve but what I take
with my camera (sony) it isn't read by hp and viceversa: different
formatting !,you can't write with one and read with the other !!!
