I have the MS Precision Wheel with the Sidewinder 4.0 software installed
on my WinXP Pro system. Since I bought the MS Precision 2 joystick and
installed its software I cannot access the 'Properties' of my wheel
under 'Game Controllers'. Every time I click on 'Properties' i get the
following error message:

"SideWinder Game Controller Software 4.0
There was an internal error that may be due to low system ressources.
Please close this program, as well as other open programs, and try
again. If the problem persists, your computer may be missing necessary
components of this program. Please reinstall the software"

I need the 'Properties', because I switch the pedals to combined axes
mode there for using them in flight sims.

I tried everything, I disconnected the joystick, uninstalled/reinstalled
everything - nothing seems to help...

Can anybody help? I cannot fly without rudder pedals... Thank you very
much in advance!

Wojtek Musial

P.S. Maybe you know an utility, which can switch two axes to 1 axis
directly through DirectX, so I dont need the SW Software for it...?

I would suggest either trying to uninstall and reinstall the Sidewinder
software....or searching your PC for joy.cpl, deleting the file and
reinstalling.

May be best to uninstall, reboot....confirm joy.cpl is no longer on the
system, then try to reinstall.

Thanks for a good tip. Unfortunately it doesnt work :-(

I deleted joy.cpl (not that easy, because XP tries to restore it 'on the
fly'...) and after that 'Game Controllers' dissapeared, so I copied
another joy.cpl instead (from another machine), but the error message is
still there... hmm I run out of ideas... there must be a solution to it....

I don't believe the SideWinder software is supported in Windows XP.
Uninstall the software and add the device using the Game Controllers in
the Control Panel. Just select SideWinder (Auto-Detect) and XP should
automatically install it for you. This means you won't have all of the
features of the SideWinder software, but unfortunatley, the software
does not support XP.

The software does work under Windows XP. It sounds like you are either
trying to run it under a non-Administrator account (most likely cause, you
will get his error 100% of the time if you run under an account without
Administrator privileges), or you might have ended up replacing the device
driver that came with Windows XP with the version that came on the CD with
your device. The one on the CD is pretty much the same as the one in the OS
but the one in the OS had a couple fixes to it.

Well, the SideWinder Software works under XP (it wasnt designed to but
it works...). Of course I can use Sidewinder Autodetect, but this won't
give me combined axes either... Everything worked without problems for
nearly 2 years before installing the joystick with its software...

I'm running my XP under an administrator account for sure, but it's
interesting you get this error message if running without admin rights.

I dont understand what you want to say here :)

Addition: By using the internal Sidewinder Autodetect driver I can use
the 'Properties', but there is no switch for combining axes...

That's interesting. Any documentation or KB Article as to what
Sidewinder Game Controllers can be used with their software and which
ones can't? It seems like most of them don't work with XP and just need
to use the generic drivers. Unfortunately, I'm not lucky enough to have
multiple MS Game Contollers :p

Sidewinder 4.0 is supported in Windows XP

Sidewinder 3.02 (or earlier) is NOT supported in Windows XP.

Note that Sidewinder 4.0 was designed for the USB gaming devices that it
came with and not older Sidewinder devices.

The 3.0 software for the gameport series of devices (yes some did have USB
dongles that allowed USB connections) does not work in Windows XP because it
is written in vxd format which isn't supported in NT (NT, Windows 200,
Windows XP, ect.). This is the only package you can download from an
official source on the web.

The Sidewinder team was completing development of the 4.0 USB only devices
before Windows 2000 was finished. For that reason, even though there was no
issues running it in Windows 2000, they added the message about possible
incompatibility if the install isn't on a Win9X system. During Windows XP
development the DirectInput team discovered some issues with the original
4.0 drivers from the CD in Windows XP. Since the 4.0 drivers were not
packaged or meant to be distributed by web downloads it was decided we would
add the updated 4.0 drivers into Windows XP and have them digitally signed.
Since the drivers on the CD are not signed if a user ran the install on the
CD Windows XP would choose to keep using the newer signed drivers (by
default) over the unsigned ones and only the configuration software would be
installed. The configuration software was not added to the OS because each
device had it's own package that included around 60MB of configuration files
ect. It was decided that running the install from the CD provided with the
device would only install the software needed by that particular device. It
is possible however to force the unsigned driver to be used through the
Device Manager by choosing to update the driver and then choosing the
unsigned one from the list and ignoring the warning about it being unsigned.
There is also a setting that can be changed that would allow an unsigned
driver to be chosen over the signed one. That setting is under "Driver
Signing" in the "System Properties" dialog (RightClick My Computer and
choose Properties, then select the Hardware tab).

Hi Wojtek,

Can you send me a dxdiag report of your system? The Sidewinder Autodetect is
really the 3.02 driver that was put into the OS since the 3.02
software/driver package was blocked because the software (being in vxd
format) wouldn't run on Windows XP. It is only going to work for the older
gameport devices.

DXDIAG:
1. Click Start -> Run
2. Type "dxdiag" without the quotes and press Ok.
3. In the DirectX Diagnostic tool click "Save All Information..."
