Do I have to do something specific to get xp pro to recognize my USB 2
ports.....? Is there something in the Bios I should have done?

What is the difference between my p4p800 and the E or Deluxe versions?

I've never flashed my bios....have the original....should I bother?

Just enable usb port in the BIOS, if not...
e means wifi EDITION
dELUXE means RAID edition (or vice-versa, i'm not sure 100%)...
If your mobo runs without pb, dont flash a new Bios, or use easy update..

No need to update BIOS.

The WinXP Home or Pro can recognize USB by itself, even in case of no SP
pack.
But just better install SP1, and if possible, SP2.

In some special case, the USB add-in cards may need correct drivers.

If for some reason, the USB of P4P800 is not working, just update or direct
the
device driver to the USB driver in the accompanying CD.

The P4P800 series has some different models, depending on whether RAID is
added or not, or on how many SATA ports on board, or Firewire on board or
not.

You may have to check carefully on Asus Website about the details of these
boards.

install the intel chipset inf update...
make sure the usb 2 setting is enabled in the bios first...

The USB 2.0 driver for Microsoft* Windows XP can only be
installed on the Intel desktop board featuring USB 2.0 support.
The USB 2.0 driver enables high-speed USB connectivity.

Installation Note:

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 must be installed and
manually enabled before you can support Hi-Speed USB 2.0.

Once Service Pack 1 has been installed, complete the following
steps to enable Hi-Speed USB 2.0:

1. Open the "Device Manager" for Windows XP.
2. In the "Other devices" list, double-click the "Universal
Serial Bus (USB) Controller".
3. Select the "Driver" tab at the top of the Universal Serial
Bus (USB) Controller Properties window.
4. Click on the "Update Driver" button.
5. Click on the "Next" button.
6. Click on the "Finish" button.
7. Click on the "Close" button.
8. USB 2.0 drivers should now be enabled.

USB 2.0 should now be enabled. Close the Device Manager and
continue to install the necessary drivers using the Intel

If you've installed your chipset (INFINST.exe) drivers and
have installed Service Pack 1, and the Device Manager entries
still don't make any sense, try this:

As for flashing the BIOS, read the "more" link on the download
page next to each BIOS, and see whether it fixes a problem you
are having.

One reason for upgrading the BIOS, is to make sure your board
is ready for WinXP SP2. You can use the frequencyid utility from
Intel, to tell whether your BIOS has proper microcode support
for SP2. The "revision" the Intel utility reports, corresponds
to the version of microcode the BIOS is using. The minimum
revisions are 0F34 rev 8, 0F33 rev 7, and 0F32 rev 7. If your
processor is a different family than the three above, no problem
as far as I know. If you have one of the three processor types
listed above, and the revision is less than the one shown, then
flashing the latest BIOS will certainly fix it. Asus does not
typically list this as a "fix" in their BIOS release notes,
although they should.

I personally have always flashed to the latest BIOS, they make changes for a
reason. ASUS BIOS updates are always worthwhile.
