Thread : Wireless Cell Phone Provider for Connecting To My ISP?

I have a couple of different iPAQs (2215 & 3970) and I'd like to connect to
my ISP through my cell phone. My preference is have it count against my
normal minutes but that may not be possible. I have AT&T wireless now but I
don't believe I can do it with them. At least no one seems to know at AT&T.

Anyone have any experience with this and/or can offer some leads on which
service providers can allow me to do this? I'd like to be able to connect
to the internet without having to rely on wi-fi as my only option.

Thanks for any help....

T-Mobile allows me to connect to my ISP dialup at 9600bps. I use GPRS for
$20/mo unlimited. Its faster but not by a bunch (more importantly no usage
minutes).

Not sure how/why they claim 40kbps GPRS as the 9600 dialup is almost as
fast. Maybe they mean burst at 40kbps. Even sitting right under the
antennae I don't get anywhere near 40kbps. Latency is horrible which is the
likely culprit of the poor performance.

You could also just use AT&T's gprs service to get yo online. Dialing an
isp on any cellular network will count against your minutes and you will
only be able to connect at maximum of 14.4. With gprs or 1xRtt you will
have better speeds and you will also have a connection to the internet
through your cell phone company.

Thanks Eric. But doesn't AT&T's GPRS service cost by the MB? I think they
told me it's $7.99 per month for 4mb. I'm thinking I could use 4mb in less
than an hour. I also thought that the GPRS service is in the phone itself.
No? Counting against my minutes is fine, I would expect that. It's pretty
confusing to say the least...

I don't think ATT does CSD data. Cingular does--so ATT may soon ;-). I
connect a PDA and laptop to a Nokia 6340i on C's GAIT plan via IR. The
CSD connection is at 9600 or below--minutes come out of the standard
pool. Note--on the GSM network at least Wireless Internet is NOT needed
if you don't need WAP on the phone--CSD works without it--assuming you
have another dialup ISP of course. I believe Verizon and T-Mobile also
offer CSD plans.
