If I ultimately can't solve the vertical banding problems with my Sony
Digital 8 camcorder, is there some unit out there that you know for an
absolute fact will allow you to do passthrough capture of movie film without
problems?

When I say passthrough, I mean being able to use the camcorder lens focused
on the reflector box and go directly to the h/d via Firewire without having
to transfer to tape first, or similarly be able to send an analog signal
from a VCR etc. without having to capture to digital tape first. This Sony
Dig8 would be great if not for the vertical banding I'm getting and so far
have been unable to cure.

I have a Sony TRV20 consumer camcorder and a Sony VX2000 prosumer camcorder,
both of which do pass through perfectly.

The Sony TRV103 and TRV350 can do this.

The TRV350 can do this, but not the 103.

I use the SONY HC42 for analog pass through from a VCR. I had trouble
using the alternate S-Video connection, but I have since found the
camera setting which enables use of s-video. I haven't tested it yet
but I'm sure it will work. This set-up does require a special a/v
cable from Sony that includes the s-video cable. They have a cheapo
for around $20 and a high quality for $50.

I found Scenalyzer Live to work well for capturing.
