are there any devices that will let me go straight from a DV out to AVI
without lugging my notebook to site. Say just firewire to hdd.
Similar in concept to the sony VRD-VC20 DVDirect DVD Recorder BUT i want it
to go AVI then take and edit at the shop

Google for "Firestore". Sony has a firewire-to-harddrive recorder as well,
but that is even more expensive.

Here are three companies which offer direct-to-disk DV recording
devices. In my opinion, if you choose to use one of their products,
especially for a one-time type of shoot, you should also record to DV
tape as a backup just in case you encounter trouble back in the edit
suite when trying to access the data on the hard disk drive. This is
not to say that direct-to-disk DV recording devices are unreliable,
it's just that the extra cost of simultaneously recording to tape is
trivial, especially when dealing with an event which cannot be
re-shot.

Why couldn't I have read your post last week? LOL of course it wasn't
written yet.
That product seems amazing, 2nd generation, has ability to playback to
camera LCD, uses Lithium
batteries, and best part is cheap!! Included extra battery for $99 and basic
unit for $549, damm!!

Actually, I was going to suggest to the original poster that if he
wanted to get into the business himself, I would be glad to post
contact information for some OEM sources (mostly in the Far East), but
I was pressed for time and it would have been somewhat off-topic, so I
