I've got a Canon ZR60 that I've had about 2 1/2 years. I turned it on
for the other day to get ready for little league football and I had
the black screen when in the camera mode. It plays the tapes from
last year fine, either using the LCD or the viewfinder. Just get a
black screen in the camera mode. Have tried removing the batteries
and backup battery. Nothing but a black screen. I found on the web
that one of the sony camcorder (can't remember which model) had the
same problem. They said that it was a problem in the CCD.

Anyone else had this type or problems?

Will the canon batteries work in any other electronics? I'm gone with
Canon. I had a problem with the canon elph camera (non-digital) also.
I guess I can use the camcorder as a tape deck.

This might seem like a stupid question, but have you removed the lens cap?
(I'm serious -- I've done it myself) :-)

yes, i've removed the cap. Actually, when I got the camcorder out, i
just turned it on/off and charged the battery. When I got to the
school, removed the cap and started taping, then I noticed the black
screen. If I had removed the cap at home, i might have noticed that
it wasn't working right and brought another camcorder. But, I checked
the batteries, assuming if it turned on/off it should work since it
was working fine when I stored it (7 months). You know what the say
about assuming.....

Yep, lesson 1: always check your gear before you go out :)

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

If you record with the black screen and then play back the tape do you
get a picture ?

A good question (but the answer is probably no)

You've probably got something as simple as a ribbon cable loose in the
camera. Beware though dismantling is a serious task unless you have
experience.
Amazingly the CCD is often connected in such a simple, analog-esqe, way
that disconnecting it doesn't cause an error, just a black screen.

If the suggestion made by marks542004 is successful, you have badly set
LCD controls or corrupt NVRAM.

The same thing happened to me last week and I'm desperate to find a fix
for it. Same black screen in record mode.

I have the exact same issue as well - anyone have any
suggestions/fixes.
