Sure, which flavour do you want? Debian, Gentoo, Yellow Dog, Mandrake?
You could of course run OS X in single user mode. Bit tricky (you
would be Root all the time), but you'd be working with a non-graphical
BSDoid. Or go graphical, install Fink (basically apt-get with some
bells and whistles) and run your favourite apps from the terminal.

I'm wondering if it makes a great PVR. To bad it doesn't have some kind
of tuner on it. I would try to run MYTH TV on it. :)

Yes one of my thoughts too.
This is Apple propriety 'slots' so no way a DVB card will fit.
But perhaps via USB2?

There are some issues I am wondering now, they give max. power consumption
as about 87 W.
In a small case like that, and specified 35 degrees C as max. environment,
looks like me you can use it to keep the coffee warm.
I dunno if they have that processor in direct contact with the alu casing
(must be one would think), but even then I would not put it on something like
plastic with a low melting point....
For the gadget collector this is sure a nice thing to have... For example
in a car! Now here is your media player! But keep it out of the sun (the car).
When looking at *performance*, and given you pay 100$ extra for a DVD burner,
and some for the wireless card etc.., how about a 939 pin Athlon 64 2.2 GHz
with a Asus K8/800 (I think it is) in a cheapo case with a cheapo AGP card,
and 500 MB 400MHz DDR, and a 65 Euro 16 speed double layer DVD burner...
That is JUST cheaper then this, www.alternate.nl has this mobo with free
wireless card...
And better for video editing.
I had planned to buy that this month, but now the HDTV demos on 13E have
stopped...
Anyways you can always stick an old Beatle Apple logo on that Athlon.

But not the smallest Mac!

http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ -> News for June 13th
http://www.silverace.com/libretto/mac2.jpg

World's smallest Mac portable!

(okay, a Toshiba Libretto 2lbs VHS case sized PC notebook running
Basilsik II emulator, but basically, Mac in 2lbs.)

You can get it down <1lbs on those Sony U50/70 series mini-notebooks.

---

Problem with the Mac Mini is that it has no analog video
inputs/capture or TV feature at all - something you'd think they'd put
into this box at this size. That would have made it the 'ultimate' Mac
PVR/TV recorder on the planet, and certainly would have sold many more
of these boxes than they do now.

Unfortunately, no built-in TV tuner/PVR, so no go for me. I'll
stick with my Shuttle XPC with ATI All-In-Wonder TV tuner instead for
now. It would have been SOOOOOO nice if Apple had put in that one extra
feature..... (and as usual, same price to build on as the Mac, but more
features....)

Just another view, but I think you're all missing the point.

A zillion desktops out there already have functional USB keyboards and
VGA monitors on their AGING PC systems.

They (or their kids) have (or desperately want) iPods.

Now, for under 5 bills, they can dump their comparatively giagantic and
uncool looking old household PC and Jobs suddenly scores another MacOS
user.

The "switchee" gets a passle of cool Mac apps (the Mac implementation of
iTunes, iSync, iMovieHD etc, etc.. and gets to explore some of the
differences between how Macs and PCs work. (Hell, stumbling onto Expose'
blows most Mac newbies away!)

Jobs is betting that if more people try Macs, they'll like it and stick
around.

Whether it works or not, only the marketplace will tell. But by
delivering a smaller, cheaper, and slicker alternative for the kind of
everyday computing people do most often, the Mac Mini will certainly
push the PC market forward once again.

The perfect "video" machine? Not HARDLY.

And clearly not intended to be.

My 2 cents anyway.

Hmmm. Go for 512 MB and the specs remind me of the eMacs at work.
We use those to edit with FCP (3.4, if that matters).
One shouldn't complain about longish rendering sessions with big
projects, though. Normal editing isn't a problem.
Temperature might become a problem, maybe. eMacs have stupid huge
fans.

This is very true.
