Just got a call from the repair shop that the TBC board in my AG-DS850
is dead and there are no replacements available.

My question is, (and I will be picking it up this afternoon to run some
tests) will it play without that board or is it Dead?

I could live without the TBC function, its the time code function that
is key, for batch capturing, but really when it comes down to it, I
have gone digital and jsut need it to be able to play the library of
S-VHS master tapes.

well it's back in house, and to answer my question, no it will not
operate without the 2 TBC boards in the unit.

so the question becomes, what are the options? but I will be on
vacation, so it's an issue for 2005. ;-)

Cannibalization. If you can find another non-working unit which has
good TBC boards, take them. Find out which models share the part --
it is likely that they were made for more than one deck.

It is also possible that some Panasonic service dealer has the
boards, even if they aren't available as parts orders. A long shot,
trying to hunt that sort of thing down.

In either case, it requires finding a contact who can get you the
things.

If you are never going to do linear editing again, there are decent,
much cheaper SVHS vcrs.
