If you have corrupted video sync pulses whether through distortion from old
vhs tape or intentional scrambling of the sync pulses on vhs tape, a good
quality Time Base Corrector will set down new sync pulses and correct the
clean new video.
Look into the TBC-1000 from DataVideo.

A US$50 box or a US$500 TBC (time base corrector) can remove the Macrovision
protection...but you won't be satisfied with the result no matter how you do
it. Go buy the DVD version of the movies. It is worth every penny.

Assuming it's available on DVD, you are correct.

I have over 100 movies on VHS that are NOT commercially available on
DVD, domestically or otherwise.

Myabe that's what he's talking about??

Or maybe he's not interested in buying a bunch of stuff twice, just
for better quality and some extras

Very True on both these points, for example when I tried to put my old 45
rpm record collection into the digital realm, I had to pay a few times.
About 5 years ago, I repurchased most of my 45 rpm records because the
originals were real scratchy and old, then I recorded them to Sony
MiniDisc's. That was digital, except back then minidisc had no way to
transfer digitally to the PC, so when I sold my minidisc player the discs
had no value and I tossed them.
Now I wanted to do the same exact thing, but the 45 rpms, just don't sound
as nice as songs downloaded directly from Apple's Music Site to my iPod, so
I've been repurchasing the same songs again at a buck each.
Doesn't seem like a lot, until you figure out that I originally paid 85
cents for the 45 rpm in the 80's, then another $1.50 for the same 45 rpm in
the late 90's. And now another $1 again for the mp3. So it's like $4 each
times 300 songs, that's $1200.
It is a lot to pay, so I don't blame people for not wanting to pay again for
stuff they already own, if they can do a clear transfer on their own for
stuff they legally own. if so, good for them.
if on the other hand they can afford new DVD's with more features, and it is
available then that is the smart way to go.

Exactly, if you want to go to the effort and minor
expense to copy a VHS movie you own, to DVD for
your own enjoyment, that's fair in my opinion.

It's too bad that we have to pay extra because the
Movie distribution industry puts expensive copy
protection on their product to defeat those who are
unwilling to pay. We also have to pay to defeat that
copy protection when we want a copy for our own use.
Then we have to pay for media, not to mention the value
of our time.

There are a few of the VHS titles that I have that I have
re-purchased as DVDs, but most will be converted by me
at home. (This will take some time, as there are a lot to do)
New movies that I acquire are/will be, purchased commercial
DVDs for the most part. There will still be the occasional TV
movie or mini-series that I will capture and archive. (Not that
this edited fair is the same as what you get with a commercial
DVD) "Band Of Brothers" for example.

Luck;
Ken
