I have one, and to be honest, I've not had any issues with it. I'm
impressed with the quality of the resulting captures, never had a droped
frame. I only wish I could hear the audio while I'm capturing it, but
to do that I'd need to connect the break-out boxes output to a monitor.

It's not supported with Adobe Premiere Pro, so you'll need to stick with
Premiere 6.5 or earlier. But that is just to capture, you can then take
your captured material elsewhere and edit it on anything.

I'd keep clear as well!!

I had one for a while but found premiere a pain in the neck, plus i never
got real-time preview even with prem 6.5 and a fast system!!! If your
looking at it for capturing analogue then it might be ok but if your doing
DV then get a firewire card and get some decent software to edit with -
Edius, Vegas etc...

I'd pay very little for one if you must get one!!!

DV500 has a very good quality.
I think it should be no problem with your PC-components.

The main-problem: Pinnacle stopped support.
The latest driver 4.5a (for Win98,ME,2000,XP) work best in Premiere 6.x,
Pinnacle Edition-Software or DV-tools.
In all three applications you can capture DV or analogue.

All other application can use the card only as OHCI-DV-controller.

If you buy one :
Consider the breakout-box:
new one is the black-box with analog and DV-in/outputs,
old one (BlueBox) has only analog in/outputs and DV is only available on
bracket of the card.

Go read at the Dv500 forum to learn what to do... and NOT do!
http://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/re [...] TypesID=96

ESPECIALLY read in that forum to see if your EXACT brand/model of
motherboard will work well with the Dv500... not all MB's do!

The latest driver 4.5 is at the "All Updates" link
http://www.pinnaclesys.com/support [...] ductID=321

To then create MPEG output for a DVD get the 4.5a patch

I have had no problems with mine either. If you use Scenalyzer Live for
capture you get audio through the speakers. There is a version of Liquid
Edition 5.5 for the DV500. This is much better than Premiere 6.5 once you
get the hang of it. I also thoroughly recommend Scenalyzer Live.

I've just downloaded a copy, not bad! But it does appear not to support
larger than 4Gb file sizes in PAL, which wouldn't be much use for long
captures. Or will it do more when registered?

In the past I was thinking getting this as well. A friend of mine did a test
analog capture for me and it looked good. However, he complained about
instability of drivers and so forth. He ended up getting Canopus and was very
happy about it. I ended up getting LifeView's FlyVideo 3000FM for analog
capture.
I must say that LifeView's quality is a bit better than DV500 (both use the
same ADC). However, it all depends what you want to do. If it's just analog
capture, I recommend a simple TV Tuner card based on Philips chipset. LifeView
is a very good choice. If you want both analog and DV capture, you should be
looking at Canopus or buy separately FireWire card and TV Tuner card.

I just don't think it's worth to invest $$$ in something that is no longer
supported or no longer will be supported.

POD,
Did you look for an option in the preferences? I believe their should be a
choice of file size.
It's been a while since I've used it but sort of remember it doing larger
than 4g file saves.

I do US rather than PAL, but have captured about 1.5 hours as one file

4Gig is, however, the size limit of a FAT32 formatted drive

When loading Premiere and the Dv500 driver you MUST tell it to load a
predefined Pinnacle setting for all to work

John,
Yes the 4gb limit is because of Fat32, I was assuming he already was using
an ntfs formatted drive however since I have other software also that can
split the video capture every 2gb, 4gb or unlimited depending on the capture
setting you specify. So I wasn't sure if it did also even when using on an
ntfs drive. It was a suggestion.

It only supports unlimited file size for NTSC, not PAL And I have NTFS
drives, so it's not as if it's picking up on FAT32 issues.

It should do unlimited captures in NTSC, it will do it in PAL. It was
originally developed to capture large files to FAT32 as it splits files that
can joined, after editing, without any dropped frames at the split. You may
need to register for the unlimited feature, check the website.

Sorry I mis-read that. I capture unlimited in PAL no problem. One thing
I have noticed is that if you originally installed the DV500 drivers for PAL
Sclive will not capture NTSC but that may be due to issues other than the
program. Apart from that its the best few quid I've ever spent on a program.
