Hey people. I just installed Linux for the very first time & am happy to say it went smooth & fairly quickly. I am running Corel Linux OS. On the box it says it's "Debian 2.2.16 Kernel & glibc 2.1" (what ever that means).
I went to Nvidia's site to get the latest video drivers but can't figure out which to download. Also, Corel is not listed, but Redhat & Mandrake are. Does this mean I'm stuck without drivers? I am really stuck here. I checked the book that came in the box & it says Linux will automatically load the best driver for my TNT2. If this is correct, why does everything look so crappy when I'm on the web but looks fine within the OS? Can someone plz help me to select proper driver off of Nvidia's site.
Also, is there any Linux sites for newbies/idiots/morons etc like me to go to get the basics.........

Hmmm not too sure about nVidia drivers on Corel. Your best shot is to get the source tarballs (the .tar.gz files). Don't worry, you have a pretty good shot at getting those to work.

As for stuff looking fine within the O/S but crappy on the Web...that's Netscape. Netscape sucks @$$. The fonts in Netscape are terrible, and the workarounds for that only half-work. If you got KDE installed, you should have Konqueror, which does very well for many (but not all) web pages. There's also <A HREF="http://www.mozilla.org/" target="_new">Mozilla</A>, a browser based on the Netscape source code, yet heavily improved. Mozilla is still classified as "beta" but is far more stable than Netscape.

As for where to go for basics, I suppose http://www.linuxdoc.org/ would be a good place to start--I believe the Linux User's Guide is there. That document is a good thing for a beginner to read.

Sooner or later, you might want to get yourself a big fat Linux book. I found "RedHat Linux Unleashed" to be an excellent book after I chewed through the Linux User Guide. There's a "Corel Linux Unleashed" book which I suspect will be just as helpful for you as the RedHat version was for me. Not 100% sure on that though.

I don't think this is your video card driver. It's your fonts. Here are some <A HREF="http://www.linux.com/search/fts.phtml?search=deuglification" target="_new">references</A> you might look at.

Also, you might consider a newer distribution. Corel Linux is pretty much dead. You shouldn't expect much in the way of updates, etc. from them. See some of the other threads for various distribution opinions.

As far as newbie resources.
1. Get a good book
2. lurk & ask questions on newsgroups & mailing lists
3. Watch news sites like <A HREF="http://www.linuxtoday.com" target="_new">LinuxToday</A>. They often have reviews & howtos posted.

There actually is a site called <A HREF="http://www.linuxnewbie.org" target="_new">linuxnewbie</A>. I don't know how good it is, I just thought it would be a good domain name when I read your post, so I tried it.

Congrats on the install. As for the drivers, that's just the rpms that work for mandrake and redhat. You can get the source drivers and compile them yourself (a little trickier, so i'd suggest holding off on that for a bit). Linuxnewbie (already mentioned I believe) is a good site, but you might also try the corel site. I'm running Mandrake and I found a lot of help on the Mandrake site for that. All I can really suggest is just play around a bit first and don't try to do anything too intense with it (upgrading X, compiling a kernel...), just play around and have some fun and you'll see how everything works. It's pretty easy, there's just a little bit of a learning curve, but it eventually comes.

Just one more thing, I'm not sure if corel has a version out yet that's based on the 2.4.x kernel, but if they have, you might want to download/burn it if you have a burner. Just upgrade your version. The new kernel series is better while you'll still be able to use almost all of your documentation you got with your 2.2.16 version. If, however, you'd rather just play with this version first, and upgrade to 2.4.x later, that's cool too.

First of, Welcome to Linux .

As an above poster already said the problem you have with the web looking crappy is most likely your fonts.

The learning curve in Linux is a bit steep if you have had no exp with a Unix based sistem. I would also like to recomend a good book, you can go to fatbrain.com and find loads of great books about everything Linux.

I would also suggest the following:

1- News groups. This is a must for every newbie. The more you read them the more you will learn. If you dont have a news server go to www.deja.com

2- Google. this is by far the best serach engine on the web and has a great search engine for all things Linux. go to www.google.com/linux

3- How-to's , Sure books are great and all but 99.95 of all the Linux books are based on the How-to's that people around the world wright on almost every subject based on Linux. The best site for them is www.linuxdoc.org

4- IRC dalnet has one of the best channels for Linux out there. just logon and go to #linux im sure you will find alot of helpfull people there and who knows i might be the one helping

5- All the good websights on everything tech and Linux will help you alot. www.slashdot.org www.linuxtoday.com www.linux.org www.linux.com etc etc. To many to list them all.

6- For more software try www.freshmeat.net and you will surely find what you are looking for.
