Given that some of Verizon's phones support the capability, does anybody
know what a VZW SIM card looks like?

Also, if you purchase a capable phone, is it locked to VZW's SIM or can
you purchase a pre-paid SIM card for use in the device?

Does VZW allow GSM roaming in Canada?

The VZW CDMA / GSM combo phones released so far are strictly 900 /
1800 MHz international GSM only................they won't work on
North American GSM networks PERIOD.

GSM roaming in Canada is therefore not possible.

The phones are locked to VZW.........................other
international SIMs won't work.

"VZW" does not use SIM cards or even the equivalent R-UIM cards at
all.  Other CDMA operators such as in China use R-UIM.  VZW is CDMA so
they of course will not roam on GSM in Canada.  VZW will roam on Bell
Mobility and Telus Mobility since they are CDMA operators in Canada.

VZW does use SIM cards in capable phones (for example, their CDMA World
Phones which support GSM in the 900/1800 bands).  I didn't think about
the frequencies of GSM in Canada, as Canada seems like it's closer to
Europe than the U.S. nowadays.  However, I'm guessing that VZW will
basically roam on any GSM system that Vodafone has a roaming agreement with.

GSM in Canada runs at the same frequencies as the US, so a Verizon GSM/CDMA
hybrid phone will not work in Canada. The GSM/CDMA handsets run on US CDMA
frequencies and European GSM frequencies.

Gah.

It won't work on Canadian GSM networks, is what I meant to say. Of course
you can roam on CDMA in Canada. :)

The combination GSM/CDMA phone will only roam on systems *outside* of
North America.  It's only meant to work on GSM 900 and GSM 1800.
North American GSM is 850 or 1900 only.  Verizon will roam quite
nicely in Canada on Bell Mobility and on Telus Mobility which are also
CDMA operators in Canada.  You will not be able to roam on Rogers/Fido
in Canada at all.

Yes, the VZW worldphone is locked and useless with any other sim card.  dr

We purchased a VZW worldphone, and then took it to Australia.  We purchased
local pre-paid sim cards (they are all the same size) and put it into the
phone with No-Joy.

As others have stated, the VZW worldphone is "locked" so that it only
supports a VZW sim card.  Even CS was surprised to learn this.  In our
situation, they authorized a full-refund of the worldphone AND they gave a
credit for the purchase of a phone that was unlocked, and which did accept
the pre-paid sim card.  This was 'awesome' customer service from Verizon
Wireless, unexpected and AwesomE.  The phone that did work for us, purchased
abroad: Motorola camera phone: V550, which we got from Vodophone, unlocked,
but with the pre-paid vodophone sim, receives no service in USA. dr (could
be for sale?)  With the vodophone sim card, you have to set date/time
manually.

Actually, the date/time thing is probably a function of the phone and
not the SIM card.

It's actually a combination of having a phone with "NITZ" (Network
Initiated Time Zone) and a network that has this function enabled.
Many GSM networks do not have NITZ as a feature.  In the US
cingular/AT&T and T-Mobile have NITZ throughout their networks.  In
Canada the Rogers network has NITZ while the Fido network does not.
Not all GSM handsets support NITZ which is different than CDMA
handsets which all have automatic network time update as it's part of
the CDMA spec. which runs the network.

Have you heard anything about the Fido network now that Rogers owns it?

What do you specifically want to know?  NITZ?  Fido network doesn't
use it.  Rogers does.  Right now things are really messed up on the
combined Fido/Rogers network.  You can be on ROGERS one minute and the
next you'll see that you're on Fido.

Ok so i've read this whole thread and everything so i think i got the basic concept of it.  Obviously the differnt networks run on different frequencies.  It was also said that other sim cards don't work on VWZ international phones.  That makes scense too.  Now my question is if i was able to get ahold of one of the sim cards from a tri whatever verizon phone (international one) would i be able to place that in a different phone, one from another carrier or whatever and then use that phone w/ the service that is registered to the card or does only the GSM get stored on the card and the rest in the phone?
