I haven't used Mycast via Get It Now much, but does anyone who uses it
know if it will send a severe weather alert text msg, which might them
prompt me to review the radar?

If none of the GIN weather services offer email alerts to your phone,
what/who do you use for wx alerts to the phone?

The emergency response group I belong to uses the Weather Message
Program to send weather warnings for specific counties to cellphones, e-
mail, and local faxes.

The software listens to the Emergency Managers Weather Information
Network datastream from a weather satellite. The software is about $50.

The datastream is available free to the general public via satellite
dish or Internet feed. The turn around time between NWS sending out a
product and the message going out to the end user is about 2 minutes.

You do need to have a computer running with this software all the time,
with power backup (UPS), attached to a broadband internet connection.

It is pretty inexpensive for what is does. It does the job very well.

We have enough capacity to offer the general public this service for $15
per year per e-mail address. Our subscribers include hospitals, police,
schools, and other first responders.

You might want to look into the software yourself if you are willing to
dedicate a computer and time to configure and operate the software.

I thought I saw an offer by some NWS offices to provide cell phone text
message alerts for no charge. Does not seem to be available in my area.

Check the websites of your local TV stations. Many of them offer email/text
alert weather messages now. These are usually automated and tied directly
into the NWS data. I do this with my local station and it works very well,
consistently beating even the weather radio alerts.

Do you get any spam along with the weather alerts b signing up with a
TV/Radio station ?

Well, in light of the alerts email suggestions, I should follow up by
saying I have been subscribing to wunderground.com and receiving email
alerts. From there, I use my UNIX account to split the message to the
maximum amount of characters per page my phone will accept, then have each
piece emailed to the phone. This can lead to an average of 17 or so
pages per alert, since the entire body, including communities, is all
included. I only flag severe thunderstorm and tornado watches/warnings.

It would be really nice to have even half or fewer pages for an alert. I
thought one of the Get It Now apps offered that?
