Hi everyone. I have an AMD 3500+, X800 XT PE, and 1GB PC3200 RAM. My system temp is about 35-40C and my CPU is about 25-30C at idle. Now, when under load, it jumps to 50-60C. Also, even at idle, my room smells like something is burning. It is also kinda noisy, compared to my Dell.

Should I buy Water Cooling to reduce those temperatures and lower the noise and the smell? Im looking to buy between $100-$150 Canadian range. Remember, I'm not overclocking.

Thx for your help.

Reseat your heatsink.

The burning smell sounds bad, check that it's not coming from your PSU.

You don't need water cooling.

And technically, your temps are within acceptable limits, although slighly high on load.

What cpu cooler do you have right now? If reseating it doesn't help you may want to consider getting a better one. Especially if your comp is in a hot environment all the time. I can't imaging it getting to hot in canada but if your comp room is hot all the time you will probably want more cooling.
Don't bother with liquid cooling if you arn't overclocking.

I dont think its my heatsink. I paid a guy to install all my parts on my computer. It might be coming from my PSU, because the smell i think comes directly from it. However, the PSU, is new Ultra X-CONNECT one, 500W, and all fans work, nothing wrong with it. MY friend suggested that my room is small, and the air has nowhere to travel, so it stays in the room. The heatsink for my fan is stock.

If I do get water cooling, can I connect it to my PSU o reduce that smell?

Putting liquid cooling on a psu is no easy task, I don't recommend it unless you are very knowlegable with electronics and metalworking. There are some liquid cooled power supplies avalaible but they all likely suck.

So what can i do? Plz, any help would be appreciated. Im in desperate need of help. Could you maybe give me a guide for liquid cooling the PSU? Or maybe the comp just needs more fans? Plz? any help?? How can I ventilate my comp so that the air does not circulate in my room?

DO NOT LIQUID COOL YOUR PSU.

DO NOT BUY LIQUID COOLING OF ANYKIND - YOU DO NOT NEED IT.

DO NOT EVEN THINK THE WORDS 'LIQUID' AND 'COOLING' EVER AGAIN

Seriously, water cooling is only of real use when you are overclocking, which you are not doing. The burning smell coming from the PSU could just be because it is new. If it doesn't subside within a couple of days it may be faulty.

OK, no offence, but your cousin is an idiot! - Does his PC sound like a jet engine by any chance?

As I said before sit tight and hopefully the smell will subside

Some companies use an oily coating on certain power supply components that can burn off over time. Devices with such coatings start out noticably smelly, and the smell diminishes over time.

If your psu is indeed faulty just get an Antec TruePower 480 or 550 (depending on budget). I've got the 550 and it is wisper silent and supplies plenty of juice :)

If you are looking to lower those temps just get one of the Zalman CNPS7700 coolers toms just reviewed. If that is to big the smaller CNPS7000 should do fine :)

Crashman is probably correct. I bought a PSU a few days ago for an old P3. As soon as I cranked it up I could smell the PSU. When I took it back, the owner of the shop told me that the smell would go away in about a week, and it did.

Thx for all the replies guys. Appreciate it. Ok, my power supply is an Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU. My CPU temp is 20-30C at idle, and 45-60C under load. Im thinking about getting a better case, because the one I have, looks like [-peep-], and has bad cooling i.e. not good quality casing, case fan is crap, etc. I was thinking about getting the ThermalTake . ThermalTake Tsunami Series Aluminum ATX Mid-Tower Case with Clear Side, Top USB, Firewire and Audio Ports - Silver. Its the one with the wavy door. This has good case fans, but I want to attach more fans. When you look at the pic, there are no slots for more fans, only the ones built into it. I talked to a friend and he said u can always drill a hole, but I dont want to do that. He also said that I could get PCI card fans, but they would all point to my vid card, right? Is there any way of cooling the system with more case fans? Thx.

BTW, I got my comp about 2 weeks ago, wont the oil have burned out already? How long do I still have to wait?

Appreciate all this.

I would think it would burn off within hours of continuos usage. But your temps are not extreme.
So, I dunno...If its doing it for weeks, something doesn''t seem right, and your concern is justified.
