My regular phone went T.U. and I won't be able to get a new one till next
week so a friend loaned me his old backup Motorola T720c. I activated it
online to my existing phone number and hey, that's a nice phone.

Great earpiece sound and people I've called said the phone sounds great.
Nice features too. It doesn't seem to be a current model-- but there are
lots of them on Ebay for not too much money.

Any reason I shouldn't pick up one or two?

I should have added-- I use it mostly for business and need a tri mode flip
phone with an external caller ID display. I don't care about any "teenager"
features. Sound quality, reliability, signal strength are the key features
for me.

The T720 had multiple 'issues'.
So much so that they came out with a T730 fairly quickly.

Pretty much the same phone, with some of the stuff fixed.
Had to release a totally new phone model, because the 720 had such
a bad reputation.

I would avoid the T720 if I were you.

FWIW, my wife and I each had a T720c and used them without incident for 2
years. Never had any bugs that we noticed, and we never had to replace the
batteries or anything. My .02

I tried 5 in a row when it was new, none lasted more than a week. I gave
up. Simply put: a really spectacular phone, but once in a while (once a
week, or for some once a day) the phone will appear to loose its mind, and
is quickly fixed by removing and reinserting the battery. Some had no
problems at all. Others had problems like: outside display would show an
incoming call, but you couldn't pick it up; if you charged the phone
over-night, it locked up, your outside display would be blank, inside would
be just fine, etc.

The bottom line is that it was pushed out quickly, despite VZW's claim to do
rigorous QA. All were disappointed. For those that were problem free, an
awesome phone! The choice is yours. dr

I wouldn't go out and spend a lot on that phone. I had it as my last model
and I couldn't wait to upgrade, which is what I did this past February. The
phone would cut out on me during a conversation sometimes. The calendar
wouldn't alert me properly to dates I inputed into it. Either it would
notify after the fact or way early (several months early in fact). There
were other problems with it as well. Not a good phone, in my opinion.

I was told to stay away from that model and instead look at the T730c.
I guess the 720 was very buggy and the 730 was released, as a
replacement, as the earlier model had a very bad rep. The 730 is
sussoped to be a very similar phone, but with many fixes, so it is not
so buggy.

Just one note if you buy one off of eBay. Please look very closely at
the sellers feedback, as by doing that I found that one guy was selling
what he claimed to be 730s, but were really 720s with a 730 face plate.

My wife has been using a T730 for about 2 years without incident. I was
also using a T730 without incident until I switched to PDA phones about a
year or so ago (Samsung i600 and now a Treo 650).

If you like the T720/T730 and are looking to buy one, look for the T730 on
eBay as it has some bug fixes that helped overcome some of the shortcomings
of the T720.

I liked my T730 enough that I keep it around as a backup in case my Treo
were to ever go dead and I needed a phone while it got replaced. Likewise
my wife has never had an issue with her current T730 after a couple of
initial replacements.

(I will be replacing it with a Moto e815 in a month under the New Every 2
Year plan. But that's just because I like to have something new....)

I say find a nice used T730 in good condition on eBay and try it out!

Actually, 99% of the fixes between the "720" and the "730" are in the
software, and the "730" software runs just fine on a "720". I have such
a configuration. They changed the faceplate on the 730, and tweaked the
connector strap between the two sections to deal with occasional
problems with it working loose. The main reason for the name change was
the bad reputation the 720 had, but a 720 upgraded with 730 software is,
for all intents and purposes, a 730. This software upgrade is officially
supported and can be done at any VZW store equipped to flash phones.
