I want a palm PDA and a phone in a single device. I'm not particularly
interested in using the device to read E-mail or surf (though I would
do that occasionalcy if I could).

Problem: I went into a Verizon store the other day and was told that I
must buy a data plan if I get the 650. That doesn't make sense to me -
I just wawnt a Palm and a phone combined. Was the saleswoman correct?
If not, how can I convince her that she's not? I asked a couiple of
different ways and she was insistent.

This was all done in the context of upgrading my family plan to 500
minutes from 400. My wife has a 7135, and the saleswoman was having a
very hard time changing my plan without the data plan on the 7135. She
did eventually succeed.

One more question, if a Treo 650 without a data plan is possible:

I plan to move my 91 year old mother from her own individual $39.95
plan into my family plan. She doesn't use more than about 50
min./month. My mother doesn't want to change phones, but she is
eligible for an upgrade, an eligibility that will end when she goes
onto my family plan. I was thinking of upgrading her to the Treo 650,
moving her onto my family plan, and then activating the 650 with my
number. Is that permitted? If I can do this, do I have to do it in a
sneaky sort of way, or is it totally permissible?

Thanks for your answers.

When I go to the VZW web site, I can purchase a MS SmartPhone w/o a data
plan. The Treo is out of stock so I couldn't test that particular phone.
I thought I remembered reading that Verizon was going to start requiring
data plans, but not obviously on the Samsung i600 or the Blackberry
device I tried.

The salesperson probably thinks she's correct. Whether or not she
really is, I don't know. VZW has flipflopped on that a few times. When
I got my previous smartphone from them almost two years ago, I had to
get a data/voice plan that I think they no longer offer. Last summer,
I was able to switch to a normal voice plan, but now apparently they
may have flipped again.

FYI, other providers do not necessarily have this limitation. VZW has
no coverage where I live and I finally got tired of that, so I recently
signed up with Cingular. I asked if I could get the Treo and not have
a data plan and they said "sure, no problem". I just had to pay $50
more for the phone, and any online data usage will be billed per-use.

You can have that with Verizon too. I just got the Treo 650 and
they're charging me $15/MB or 1.46 cents/KB.

I think what she meant when she said you must have a data plan with
the Treo 650 is that you cannot just pay for the MOU (minutes of use)
like some people are doing with the Treo 600.

Cool, I was under the strong impression that they now required an
actual $X/month data plan. btw, Cingular's pay-per-use is 1 cent/kB.
(I'm probably going to get socked this month, but other than initial
use replacing ringtones, etc, I tend to not use online data that much
via the cellphone.)

.... or the Kyocera 7135, which I still have on VZW (canceling soonish).

If I knew that they were going to charge me $15/MB with the
Treo 650 (even for connecting to Earthlink's access number)
I would have kept on using my Kyocera 7135 a little longer
(until they offer a more reasonable data plan).
