My daughter is considering the use of her Verizon phone to get her email
when she occassionaly travels. She is buying the futuredial setup and
wonders what kind of charges to anticipate from Verizon. Anyone have any
experience with the billing here?

There's still a way to get basic data access (slow speed) without any
additional monthly charge if you are patient:
http://cell.uoregon.edu/verizon/data/setup.html This method works fine for
reading and sending email, and not so great for web (but usable in a pinch).
I use it for web, but turn off images in my browser to help speed it up-- or
use the Venturi compression software included with the mobile office kit.

In many cases, folks are even able to connect to the "high-speed" 1x data
service without any
additional charges, however, some have reported that Verizon is "cracking
down" on 1x data
use for folks without a specific data plan.
http://cell.uoregon.edu/verizon/data/free.html

The safe bet is the circuit-switched data option described in the first URL.
It will use minutes
but you should not be billed anything for data separately.

PS: PDA phones now seem to require a separate data plan. The information
above is
primarily for non-PDA phones (PDA examples are Palm, Blackberry, Windows
SmartPhone)

It should be possible to make a PDA phone (in most cases) connect as Circuit
Switched data mode instead of packet data (1X). This should result in much
lower charges (just minutes). The first month go light on usage to verify
how billing works.

Just a note, that page states "I have been told that with the new
no-roaming..." Thus it is rumor, not any sort of fact.

My recent AC 2 CONTRACT lists National Extended Service Access (1x Data)
as an included feature. (NationalAccess when I inquired exactly what it
meant)

Also note, the wording on Verizon's web page that _appears_ to prohibit it
would also prohibit low speed (Q2N/QNC) data!

Hello Jim -
I made some major changes to this page:
http://cell.uoregon.edu/verizon/data/free.html

It's now more up to date with regard to the current state of Verizon data
as an included voice plan feature.

Beware. Having a Treo 600 you must connect to the high speed network
if you are going directly to the net using the phone. They will charge
you through the nose. If she is just collecting email, it is highly
suggested that she only download headers and then mark the headers to
download the full email.

Beware that Verizon's data plans are the highest in the land. If
occasional usage then it should be very judiciously and the pay as you
go ($0.008/kb) plan may be good. If she uses email every day, it's a
pick'em. Depending upon the volume, if it's more than 8MB per month
then it's $45 using the unlimited plan as the best option.

My considerations in moving to Spring are because of the charges
(Sprint is $10 or $15 for unlimited access.) The old phones like the
Samsung i600 may still use the old network but you may see data
charges as well and there is unfortunately no guarantee.

I have an old National Single Rate plan with free weekend minutes. I
use many minutes each weekend for the slow speed "Mobile Office" service
with my Motorola Startac 7868. This phone will not work on the higher
speed data service. I would sure hate to get billed extra for data for
this usage. I'd also hate to have the service discontinued....

Does anyone know what the Verizon position on the continuation of this
slow mobile office data service is?

No one knows for sure what will happen to circuit switched data. Lots of
folks were promised circuit switched data as a voiceplan feature. For
several years it was advertised as "Mobile Office for circuit switched" data
and you could even buy a cable with the venturi software from Verizon (which
I did, and still use). This option was never charged for separately-- just
billed as minutes of use.

Anyway, my guess is that they'll leave circuit switched data alone, because
this was a standard feature, promised to customers when they signed up as an
included feature, documented in paper, and website form.

The 1X data is a different matter to a certain extent because it was not
documented as an included feature in paper or electronic form. Being a geek
and spending time at the Verizon store, I heard the feature offered and
promised verbally to literally anyone who asked about data. Further,
customer service at 611 promised this, and so did our local Verizon rep for
the University of Oregon where I work. Anyway, the story changed after
about a year of advertising it verbally as an included feature. Folks are
now told they need to buy 1X data if they want to use it (although many
continue to use it without a separate data plan). Seems to me that the only
feature likely in jeopardy, if any, is 1X data as an included feature of
voice plans.

If Verizon takes away all of the included data, they will lose customers
who've been using it for years. They may be more likely to introduce new
plans enticing enough to get you to voluntarily switch-- where the new plan
doesn't include data use rather than simply take it away.

Ultimately, they'll charge (and do) whatever they think they can get away
with. Luckily, the market is fiercly competitive including for data-- and
there are other options...

Thanks for the very complete yet concise story Dan. I was concerned about
rumors we heard that Verizon was eliminating free MOU data. I too hope
that means only free access to 1X data! We also bought the "Mobile
Office Kit" for our Startac phone when we got it, and continue to use it
wherever it works, and it works in more and more places as digital
service expands. We love our now obsolete National Single Rate plan,
with unlimited free weekends for life of the plan, and do not intend to
upgrade it voluntarily.

Funny thing is, the other day my wife got a call from a Verizon rep
saying my plan was expiring....I was out, he did not call back to discuss
it further. We've been running without a contract for years. I bet he'd
love to convince us to "upgrade" to a Treo... <VBG> In the uncertainty,
I sure will not go under contract with Verizon now! As you say, there
are competitors with good options...and we'll keep our options open!
