I'm having problems installing USB printers and All In Ones on Windows XP SP2
computers. Here's what happens:

.. Printer driver installation reaches prompt to connect the printer/All In
One USB cable to the computer
.. I plug the USB cable in (with the printer/All In One switched on)
.. The Windows XP Found New Hardware wizard launches, tries to install the
printer but eventually displays "There was a problem installing your new
hardware" in the system tray
.. Meanwhile, the printer driver installation has hung on the prompt to plug
the USB cable in
.. I cancel the prompt, the installation continues but the printer/All In One
isn't installed properly.

I've had this problem with every Epson and Lexmark device I've tried to
install since Windows XP SP2 came out. I've tried latest drivers but this
doesn't resolve the problem.

Can anyone help?

There's your problem. You don't want "dueling installations". Either
install the printer using the supplied driver, or let Windows
install it.

Usually you'll get instructions with the printer that say to install
with the supplied driver. In this case, when you plug in the printer
(as instructed by the supplied driver) the Windows install wizard
may start up. Click on "Cancel" or "No" or whatever the button is
that tells it to go away.

Once you have a half-done installation, you may need to unplug the
printer, uninstall the printer completely, then reboot and reinstall
the printer. This time follow the manufacturer's instructions to the
letter.

Unplug printer.
Uninstall then reinstall the printer. Insert the software CD per instructions
to install. During the installation of the software it will tell WHEN to
plug the
printer into the USB port.

Epson Stylus Photo RX500 (All In One), an Epson Stylus Color Photo printer
(haven't got the model name to hand) and a Lexus All In One (again, I haven't
got the model number to habd at the moment).

Did you ever get this resolved?? I've got the exact same problem with XP SP2
when installing an HP Photosmart 7450. When the installation says to plug it
in, up pops the found new hardware dialog. Cancelling it leaves the printer
communication to time out. Following it results in a CRC error. I also had
the same problem with a new Lexmark and a Dell 720. I've removed all the
software for all the printers, removed the drivers, removed the USB ports,
tried to install from C: instead of a CD, changed cables, selected different
ports, removed all the extra software I could find, scanned for spyware and
viruses, disabled Norton Internet Security, run SFC /scannow, and probably
several other things that I can't remember. Any ideas short of reloading XP?

Hi David,

No, I never did come up with an answer to this. I have the following
additional information which may or may not be of use:

1. The problem seems to me mainly with All In One's, rather than just
printers, have you found this?
2. When the installation fails there are a variety of symptoms afterwards
which seem to depend upon which device I'm trying to install, e.g. the Epson
RX500 prints OK but locks up at a random time after first printing whereas
the Lexmark All In One is just very, very slow.
3. I contacted Epson about the problem and they blamed a conflict between
the RX500 and my Intel USB chipset which is possible but on balance I believe
is unlikely. As I say, I've tried this on 3 machines with the same result.
4. The RX500 installs fine to Win 2K.
5. Two of the three machines I'm having the problem with are Dell computers
with Windows XP pre-loaded and then service packed to SP2.

I would be interested to know if a re-installation of Windows XP resolves
the matter. Sometime in the next couple of weeks I'm probably going to reload
one of my three computers with Windows XP and try installing the Lexmark
before I've appplied any service packs and see what happens. I have a feeling
that might resolve the problem.

However, it won't help me much as I don't have the time to wipe the machine
that I want to run the RX500 on.

I have a very similar problem with a Dell desktop and an Epson CX5400. I can
actually complete the installation...but when the printer is plugged in and
turned on the computer comes to a stand-still. When I use the Epson with my
Dell laptop (came with SP2 installed) I have no problems. I don't want to,
but if reinstalling windows helps I would do it. Have you found any other
solutions?
