I have a D-Link NIC. There's a Wake On Lane Cable included and I'm not using it. I don't remember what it does. What does that cable do? |

it keeps power to the nic so it will be ready to turn the pc on if it recieves a magic packet.

I'm curious about this cable too. My Wake On LAN function works without the cable installed.

dont know when it came about, id have to say it was widely implemented at least 3 years ago. far as im concerned it doesnt work worth sh1t. ive gotten it to work on my computers sporaticaly. ive given up on it being a viable option for anything important. theres not even that much information out there on it.

I don't know why, but on Intel managed NICs you need WOL to be connected in order to do remote boots. Does anyone know th reason for this?

because the nic needs power from somewhere, newer revision cards and slots have this integrated into the connector, if not you need that power cable.

But they do get power from the PCI slot, don't they? Using a Ghost floppy works fine, but when remote imaging from an Altiris server it's needed. I must admit I can't see much difference between Ghosting and using RIS/Altiris.

It's strange isn't it? Altiris just needs that cable on Intel Pro 100s to get the image. Altiris uses the PXE on the card though, and ghost doesn't. I suspect it's got something to do with the PXE, but I have no idea what it is.
