Battlefield 3 Freezing

Hi all,

I'm experiencing frequent lock ups while playing Battlefield 3. The game freezes and will either close itself or need to be force quit via Task Manger. I figured this was due to running out of VRAM, but it happens regardless of what video settings are used. I also don't remember having this problem before the ~3.6GB Back to Karkland update was released.

I tried formatting my computer, installing up-to-date drivers (including the latest 290.53 beta drivers from NVIDIA), and reinstalling Battlefield 3 but was unsuccessful. I noticed that some video card manufacturers had released BIOS updates for their NVIDIA 500-series cards to improve DX11 stability (by increasing their core voltage). However, there isn't one available for my card and so that isn't a solution.

Any thoughts?

System configuration:

Intel i5-2500K @ Stock Clock speeds
ASUS ENGTX570 DCII/2DIS/1280MD5
8GB 1600MHz RAM
ASRock Extreme4 Gen3
Windows 7 64-Bit SP1
Video settings on "Auto" @ 1920x1080

Multiplayer -- haven't tried singleplayer.

Try single player for a while.

I think it is due to nvidia drivers. I have two PCS running battlefield 3 at same time (myself and bro play at same time on same router). PC 1 running x2 hd 5870s in crossfire with latest amd drivers never freezes. PC 2 running nvidia 470 freezes with latest drivers after 1-10 minutes of play. Usually 1-2 minutes of play. After trying everything and reading azillion posts after googling, most with nvidia cards said new drivers freezing and to use the beta battelfield 3 driver that was released when the game was still in beta. I rolled back and reinstalled that driver for my 470 and now I can play for 30-60 min without freezing if it freezes at all. Not perfect but playable. I can't remember the beta nvidia driver number and I am not at home where I can look it up but I am sure you could google it to find it.

Interesting! If you happen get the driver number please post it. I'll do some searching to find the driver when BF3 was in beta. Thanks for the info.

Try nvidia driver 285.38. Seems to work a lot better than the newer ones, at least for the gtx 470. I have reloaded game multiple times, erased and reloaded new drivers, combed through tons of blogs trying to find a fix for the freezing. Even updated from vista to win 7 (didn't make a difference for freezing). This was only thing that has helped and this beta driver has not seemed to affect other games that I play (stwor, battleground europe.wwiionline). Still freezes once in awhile but not near as often. Give it a shot. Cheers

I had the same problem with single player until updating the drivers to the latest for GTX480. That fixed it for ages but now it continually crashes at Fear no Evil, as soon as you pull away in the 2 Abrahms. I only play multi-player now with no problems at all. It's definitely the drivers but I'll wait for new ones before trying single player again.
Have you had issues at this stage in the game?
Also, there are no gpu BIOS updates from Asus for the GTX480 either.

Battlefield 3 is a superb games. I mostly play this games when i free in home This is a fighting games. This is a mission game. This is my favorite game..

"GTS 250 Serious Driver bug with battlefield 3 bug discription and a temp fix for now". Go to nvidia website and view this thread, interesting conversation here about same driver bug. They mention driver 280.26 worked the best. Might aid in your research. decoy77

Hi guys finally there's a solution for us the new Nvidia beta driver just came out you're all welcome to download and install, don't forget to make a clean installation with the new driver(can find steps for clean installation in my original post up there)

This was also a nvidia company response to someone off their website, not sure if it'll be any help since in your original post they u already had a new driver.

........................i get the white crash....using gtx 465 with xfx 780i and 2cord quad cpc.handles every other game i throw at it....just *** on bf3
