I'm getting ready to renew my contract w/Verizon, and I figure I might as
well upgrade my phone at the same time. There are several camera phones
available for cheap - but I'm just wondering how much that stuff will nickel
and dime me to death. So anyway, my question...

When I take digital photos with my camera phone, what are the options for
getting those images onto my PC or onto a moblog page? I'm worried that the
only way to move photos from the handset to another location is via
toll-based messages. (Either with per message fees, or in "blocks" of
pic/msgs for a fee) I know from personal experience that Verizon will
disable as much as they can in a phone in order to squeeze another dollar
out of the customer, so I'm assuming there is no "download cable" or other
method of free pic-dumping, right?

They have this "pixplace" thing that might be a solution, though... I
can't tell if you have to pay to send your pics to "your site" on there or
not. If and when I take pix with my camera phone, I'm 99% sure that I'm not
gonna need to instantly pix/msg it to someone else... I'm hoping that I
won't HAVE to do that in order to view it elsewhere.

Anyway - if someone wants to sum all the options up real quick, it'd be
appreciated. I've mucked around on the VZW site for a bit and I've not been
able to get an answer that seems clear to me.

There are several phones that Verizon carries that can work with a free
program such as Bitpim. All you need is a USB cable that connects to the
phone. For the LG VX6000 for example I bought a cable (actually a USB to
serial cable that has a Prolific serial to USB convertor box in the middle
of it) and it works just fine with the later versions of Bitpim. To find out
which phones might work that way, check out Bitpim at:

By using this cable and Bitpim, I can transfer photos, ringtones, phonebook,
etc, back and forth between the phone and my Windows XP PC. Bitpim also
works on the Mac I understand.

You can use most jpegs for wallpaper on the phone (just resize/crop to the
smaller size needed for the phone). You can use MP3 files and midi files on
the phone also but they should be 'cut down' so that they will not take up
nearly as much space as they normally would. There's a lot to it, but it's
not that hard to do and you avoid VZW's picture message charges.

Bob, any idea if I would be OK to use bitpim for my new LG VX6100
following the VX6000 instructions? Could I ruin the phone? If that
risks screwing up the phone, do you know of any other safe, free
options to download photos to my PC (without paying Verizon?
