Does anybody know of a current flip style phone that identifies the
caller externally (with the phone closed) by flashing a custom color
and/or ring tone?

My son has an old Samsung SCH-A310 that flashes one of 7 colors and
gives the associated ring tone, but that phone is discontinued.
Google found the Hitachi P300, also pretty old and it was for Sprint
(and got otherwise lousy reviews).

I'm looking for something on either ATT or Verizon. None of the
phones on the usual sites seem to advertize this feature. Is it now
just so common that they don't mention it? Hmm. I looked at the .pdf
manual for the LG V4600, which advertizes color external LCD, but it
said nothing about customizing by caller id.

This seems like such a no-brainer feature - I can't believe it's just
disappeared off the face of the earth.

Lots of phones, including my brand-new Sprint Samsung SPH-A660, can do custom
rings based on incoming caller ID.

Verizon? Check the Samsung SCH-A650; it seems to be almost identical to the 660
except that Verizon may have a couple features disabled that Sprint doesn't.
It's a tri-mode CDMA1900/CDMA800/analog phone.

Colors, no, I am not sure which phones flash their LED in different colors, but
there should be a buttload of phones that will do custom ringtones for specific
caller ID...

Doesn't the LG VX4400 have this feature? I think it may be limited to 3
or 4 colors. You do something like define groups and then you can
specify the outside display color for each group. So it's not the LED
itself that "rings" in a particular color but the outside display changes
color? I would think the subsequent LGs might have this feature as well.

My Z600 does that with custom ring tones (but not color), standard on at least
the higher-end Sony Ericsson handsets, as well as many others.

I have the 4400 and I think the colors may only be for pages, missed
calls, reminders, standby, and incoming calls.

The Verizon Samsung SCH-a670 not only does custom ID ringtones, but you
can add PICTURE caller ID on the outside display. You can set a picture
of a certain color--or anything else you want to display when someone
calls.

yep. Most of the newer Samsungs can do this.

The Samsung a670 (Verizon) has custom ringtones and custom caller
picture id that shows up on the external screen.
