Using WinME...Going to be in a motel during the week for the next 4-5 months. I've signed up with a local ISP but I'm having trouble getting the "dial 9 for an outside line" to work. I've found the option to do it but it doesn't work.

What I think may be the problem is the modem doesn't pause long enough after the 9 to get the second dial tone before dialing the connection number.

Is there a trick to get it to do this properly?

Thanks!

9, XXXXXXX

Should do it. Way we do it here at work. Depends on the dialer, of course. MIght try a different dialer if the default Windows DUN one still doesn't work. SHouldn't really be a problem though

So...the single comma after the 9 is what makes it wait for the next dial tone? I'll give it a try next week.

Thanks

Each comma gives it a delay, I think it's like 2 seconds. The more delay you need, the more commas!

Well...there is a new wrinkle in my attempts at motel internet. I've tried the dialing properties things six ways from Sunday and am having no success. I talked to the manager, she said their phone system is digital and that I need an analog converter between my computer and their phone system. According to her, that is the only way people have been able to connect from their motel.

I'm a little suspect of her technical capabilities...does she know what she's talking about?

Nah, she's probably right. We have combo digital/analog phone system at work, modems/fax machines only work on the analog cards(that's why we have them). Dunno about a particular converter for it, but she's prboably right about the digital phone system being the problem. Often places like that will have a seperate analog only phone jack specifically for modem userse. Well, used to in dark ages. Now they tend to just have ethernet jacks and charge youf ro that. :)

It's possible that the digital system filters out "noise" like...modem signals. Ah, the superiority of Analog, where you hear EVERYTHING. You might try an old mom & pop hotel next time, I'm sure they'd appreciate the business :)

Heh heh...I am at a mom and pop hotel, and it has a barn attached to the back of it. It's in Carlton WA, population 564. One motel, one small store w/two gas pumps, a post office and a bridge over the river where you can go a swimmin'. That's why I thought the old gal might be technically challenged.

Anyway, I found some gizmo at Radio Shack that should do the trick...
