7. Nikon Coolpix P1: WiFi In Your Pocket

WiFi is a wireless networking technology that becomes more in vogue every day, and it's not limited to just laptop computers - it's now conquering the digital camera market as well! Nikon was one of the first to adopt it, but their P1 has more than WiFi to attract buyers.

Overall Design

The P1 belongs in the category of "truly compact" compacts, small in size and very thin. While not competing with miniature models, it will fit easily into most pockets, and you'll hardly notice its weight. But despite its very small size, this isn't a "full-auto only" model. Nikon's aim was to produce a camera that offers the functions that are indispensable for demanding photographers along with the automation needed by beginning users or those who are in a hurry. Aiming is exclusively through the big 2.5" screen.

The P1's shape is traditional, with a kind of mini-handgrip for the right hand and a retractable lens. Unlike many small compacts, the P1 has a rotating selector for the shooting mode and also for direct access to essential adjustments like ISO sensitivity. In fact, the ergonomics are better than average, and handling is quite good since the main controls are well placed.
