9. Hard Disk And Optical Drive

Despite the slim case design, the Compaq NW8240 boasts a multi-functional module slot called Multibay II with a height of only 9.5 mm. Depending on the user's needs, an optical drive or an additional hard disk can be inserted in this slot, as can the weight-saving empty module, which lowers the weight of the unit by about 6 ounces. By default, the slot houses the optical drive.

The hard disk is located in a compartment underneath the laptop. When replacing the hard disk, it must first be extracted from a safety jacket. This "Mobile Data Protection System", as HP calls it, protects the hard disk against excessive impact. Technically, the solution is rather delicate, so inexperienced people should stay clear of this operation. In terms of noise, the running hard disk is hardly noticeable.

Removing the lid of the hard disk compartment takes a matter of seconds; the hard disk itself is embedded in a jacket. The quick-install guide is very useful.

Performance: The tested laptop contains an 80 GB Hitachi Travelstar HTS541080G9AT00 hard disk. The 5400 RPM hard disk represents a compromise between noise control and performance. Upon request, the laptop can ship with a 7200 RPM hard disk with a storage capacity of up to 100 GB.
