HP's Compaq NW8240 is an absolutely convincing mobile workstation. For approximately $3,000, you get a notebook with impressive OpenGL performance, quality, functionality, and - last but not least - integrated security functions. Based on all of these attributes, the NW8240 truly deserves the MobilityGuru Editor's Choice Award.

Professional users who need maximum rendering performance should wait until the release of the Compaq nw8440, which will be equipped with a dual-core CPU and ATi's Mobility FireGL V5200 GPU. With a similar configuration, the price will be about $4,100. Though this sounds like a hefty price increase, the expected substantial increase in rendering speed - estimated SPECapc value rendering composite of approximately 2.5 - will allow professionals to quickly amortize the extra cost.
On the other hand, for students of architecture, or digital content creators, it may make sense to wait until June to consider an investment in a NW8240 at a reduced price.
