10. PCMark05 Benchmarks

Like SYSmark 2004 SE, PCMark05 is all about performance. PCMark05 includes an overall system test suite and test suites that focus on the CPU, memory, graphics and hard disk drives. If any part of a test suite cannot run or fails, a PCMark05 score is not computed for that suite.

PCMark scores are scaled to run between 1200 and 5500. Low and high end reference systems are used to compute the scores at both ends of the range.

Here are the charts showing PCMark05 scores for the Acer TravelMate 2304LCi.

PCMark05 Performance Benchmarks Conclusions

The first thing to note is that there are no charts for the PCMark05 system or graphics tests. That is because the benchmark program was unable to complete certain graphics tests, either within the system or the graphics benchmarking test suites.

As might be expected from a mobile computer designed for home and office use, the Acer 2304LCi's graphics subsystem lacks certain capabilities. In this case, the graphics subsystem does not support pixel shading and vertex shading. Pixel shading is required for the system test suite, and both shading capabilities are required for the graphics test suite.

The three test suites that completed indicate that the 2304LCi's best feature from a performance perspective is its hard disk drive, with a score 35% better than the PCMark05 low end reference computer. The notebook's CPU and memory do not perform as impressively, at 20% and 14% better than the low end reference computer. As with the MobileMark 2005 and SYSmark 2004 SE benchmarks, the 2304LCi's PCMark05 scores indicate a computer that is best suited to applications that do not challenge CPU or memory.
