Sony Details PSN 'Customer Appreciation' Program
Sony has spent the last few days flipping switches and restoring PSN access for users around the world. However, now that those users are back online (with new account passwords), the company has turned its attention to compensation packages.
Sony has already talked quite a bit about its plans to compensate users for the downtime. However, Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of corporate communications and Social Media at Sony, yesterday took to the PlayStation blog to detail in full the compensation packages for U.S. users.
First of all, all PSN customers will be offered two free games of their choice from the following list:
- Dead Nation
- inFAMOUS
- LittleBigPlanet
- Super Stardust HD
- Wipeout HD + Fury
PSP users will also get two games. Their choices are the following:
- LittleBigPlanet
- ModNation Racers
- Pursuit Force
- Killzone Liberation
As far as both platforms are concerned, the games will become available when the PlayStation Store is restored and will remain available for 30 days. Once you’ve downloaded your two games, you’ll be able to keep them forever.
In addition to a couple of free games, everyone is getting 30 free days of PlayStation Plus (existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will get 60 days free). Music Unlimited Premium Trial subscription members will receive an additional 30 days of free premium subscription while existing Music Unlimited Premium/Basic members will get 30 days plus time lost. PlayStation Home will be offering 100 free virtual items as a ‘welcome back,’ and Sony will be making a selection of movie rental titles available to PSN customers for one weekend (where Video Service is available). Details of the titles and dates for this offer have yet to be released.

Yey, I believed in Sony... by not shooting my ps3 with a bb gun. Now the hackers have even more reason to do it again. Awww poor poor Sonny. What would we do without you!!! Play xbox? lol
I believe these games are kinda old and they should be offering at least a new game in the mix. But o well free games.
I think anyone complaining about what Sony is doing for compensation needs to leave PSN behind and go to something else. While I might not like Sony, what they are doing is at least making up for the lost time.
It was free to begin with... and now I get more free stuff? o.0
YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!
Nobody's perfect. Good job Sony.
I've definitely gone back into my PC roots. This downtime just pushed me even more into it. While I do like the freebies, I'm not sure if I'll be buying any more ps3 games, ever, not with 7 p.c.'s.
I do have give Sony one brownie point for best effort in making most people happy. However, in wake of this mess we will not forget of what happened and will be more careful of how we give out information in the future.
Darkk
Hells yes. That ordeal was a huge pain, to put it as nicely as humanly possible, but this is still cool since I never got to play Infamous.

Me too...
Looked over my shelf and found PC game BattleZone 2 (1998). Got it working on Win7 x64, two machines. My son and I have been playing. Free & fun. No gaming console involved.
I found myself playing XBOX and PC more.....Wait, I never played ps3 online ever anyways. Guess ill go get my free games....No wait, id rather keep my 300 snes games on there and my CFW. Sony really got the belt didn't they. I'm not sure if they are going to come back on CFW makers with a vengeance now or back off alittle. It's in there best interest to back off, besides people with CFW make up like less the 1% of the market anyways.
So what happens if I'm a PSP and a PS3 user? Do I get 4 games free?
TOO LITTLE TO LATE.... All five games free might have made up for the outage or at least two from a better selection.
What would really make up for it? Restore the Other OS feature and every other feature they removed. How about giving me back the option to hide that annoying information board.
Until you start giving back what you took away, disgruntled customers (the hackers) will just continue to attack your network. Personally, I hope they do it again and again and again until Sony says "holly crap, lets just restore the system back to what we originally promised the consumers"..... until then, DOWN WITH SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not happy with the selection but it seems like a generous offer none the less. Infamous is cool. I already have Little Big Planet. The other games look like garbage. I was hoping they would offer Ratchet and Clank Quest for Booty. Come on Sony, what d'ya say?
I like that Sony did at least offer a couple decent games (I was expecting all $5 games), although offering 2 from a larger list with a few more good games would have been nice. I wouldn't have minded something like 20 bucks free for the psn store though on top of the other stuff.
As far how I feel about the perk package, I have mixed feelings. Mainly because its a little offensive that it seems ok that you can make such a huge error (not fixing a known issue and loosing 100 million users personal information) and basically just saying sorry and bribing the users to be happy with them again. I also realize that you cant go back and change what happened and that its to late, but hopefully they have learned from their mistake.
I do seem to feel like there is a lack of something though, 2 free games (4 if you own a psp), and free services for 30 days seems a little lack luster. It feels like there should be more...
Good thing I've never owned a console. Faithful PC user since my 386SX-25
idk about the handling aspect.
i say it'd be nice for such a large corporation to have something better than gameboy level security to begin with. the outage & account hacking should have never happened. as to the appreciation bit, i would like to have seen sony say "here. $60. free & clear psn money. do what you like." give users a chance to pick what they'd like to play (cant tell you how many games id have liked to play but said "im not giving you $15 for that" or "$10? what if it sucks & i never play it again? afterbuner, topgun...?") what about people who already have the games they're offering? so they get stiffed for having payed their money & having faith in a corporation (i know, fail anyhow, right) still? What thanks is it to them?
i'd like to snag infamous, sure. but itd be awesome to get it & still have a bit left over for say those a-- gouging map packs...
Jane, Jane, Jane... PSN being down for a period of time isn't where the majority of discontent should come from. The leak of consumer personal information is the real issue. While kids and teenagers may be more upset at the disruption of service any reasonable adult is now worried about the leak.
While I personally do not have a PS3 nor wish to own one, I certainly would not be happy with such compensation its a silly question to ask Jane. If I posted everything about you in this post perhaps even your credit card #'s and then turned around and offered you a few free video games would you be okay with that?
how about for Middle Eastern users, aren't we able to get any freebies??
Why does the network being free mean we should be OK with substandard services? Much of the content is not free, and micro-transactions abound. This is the business model Sony has taken and does not mean they are free to let known weaknesses remain on their servers and not encrypt the data.
I won't stop using the PSN, but it is a reminder for me to be more secretive with my data online.
Like I have said in previous posts; at least Sony is offering compensation. Sure, their network was (probably) not up to scratch. Yes, they probably didn't need to alienate the hacker community. But at least Sony is reimbursing customers - you don't see many corporations doing that.
thank you playstation
I'm happy with this compensation package. Congrats to Sony.
They handled the situation to the best of their ability. Not telling consumers about the attack until 7-9 days after is no big deal. It's not like consumers knowing it any earlier would make a difference. Sony can prevent future attacks now that they have upped their security.
For all those not satisfied with the compensation package, remember this: Sony is under no obligation to give us free stuff. PSN was down for 3 weeks out of the 5 years they have been operating FREE.

@eddieroolz
Yes you do, you don't see many corporations screwing up like Sony did. When netflix service goes down they reimburse you for the day you lost. Name a company that has screwed up and hasn't tried to rectify it with their customers. Too me what sony is offering is peanuts.
The entire situation amuses me. The only reason Sony went after hackers is because they were concerned about losing profits to pirating. Your average person can barely change basic PC settings let alone modify a console. It's simple to modify an xbox360 out of 10 people I know who own one none of them have theirs modified. This downtime and bad PR has cost them much more than the loss of profits due to pirating would have.
They should just due what microsoft does modding your xbox will void your warranty and result in your account being banned from online services if you get caught. This is good enough to scare your average user off from modding their console. And it doesn't compromise security or your privacy.
Sony can stuff their crap offer up their corporate jacksies.
Either I get product of MY choice to the value of the £/$/Euro 340 or I want the cash.
$/£/Euro 340 is the amount Sony owes you by law.
Are these games exclusive to US only residents? Lastly, if you had your choice of the two games on PS3... what are the best choices to make? Let's start a poll....
Sweet deal!
I'm gonna get inFamous and LittleBigPlanet.
I am interested to see what video rentals are offered : )
The games are pretty sad, but still a good move overall by Sony. It is also going to get users to try their pay services, so its kind of win-win for everybody.

Are you serious? The 7-9 days matter alot if the hackers have gotten credit card #'s, in that time you could have had 1000s stolen. Also they definitely have your email and password so if you used the same email and password combo on other sites (like your email, facebook, banking site, etc) it would be enough time to also hijack those as well. Sony should have notified its consumers with stolen information the day/minute they found out about it.
SONY HACKED AGAIN!!!!!! BWAHAHAHAHA!!! They're done, holy $#!+ perhaps now they're going to offer more than 30 day trials.

I appreciate the gesture by Sony but really, its a piss-poor compensation package. I understand not offering new AAA quality games but the selection is poor at best. Five cheap old games...really? Any game on that list a person would want they would have purchased by now. I already own inFamous and Dead Nation so I guess I am SOL since the other games hold no interest for me. The Playstaion Plus program for a month? So I get to rent a few PS1 games for a month and don't have to manually update for 30 days....Yay? Really this is a pitiful offer for the hassle and anxiety caused by this whole incident after worrying about my CC info, changing CC card and having to change all my automatic billing with other companies.
Sony has taken away functionality from the PS3, pissed off (and sued) it's user based, can't keep customer data safe and they come back all.
We givez you free gamez. Oldies but goodies. Youz forgive us now? O_o
A better compensation package would be free credit report monitoring for minimum of 1 year.
