Not long after Apple updated its notebook line, we’re seeing mysterious pictures of a MacBook Nano.

Just a few weeks back Apple announced the arrival of the new MacBook and MacBook Pro. The run up to the event saw the rumors really kick into overdrive and while some were bang on the mark, others were just stabs in the dark.

For a while now, people have been talking about the possibility of a netbook from Apple or even just a more wallet friendly UMPC. With the world and it’s mother bringing out netbooks, it seemed likely that the company would bring out another travelmate laptop for all those Mac-mad students.

Apple’s October notebook event came and went and there was no sign of a netbook from Apple, however pictures doing the rounds show a smaller notebook called the MacBook Nano. They’re more fake than Pamela Anderson’s breasts, but they look pretty neat.

Apple has a lot of extra cash floating around right now. The company has no debt and a stack of cash in the bank waiting to be spent. Realistically, if it wanted to put that money toward developing a netbook, it could. However, in a recent Apple earnings call Jobs said that the company didn’t know how to build a computer for under $500, the average price of a netbook.

“We don’t know how to build a sub-$500 computer that is not a piece of junk,” Jobs said. But Jobs also asserted that Apple has some "interesting ideas" for the segment so perhaps it’s not completely out of the question.

Around that time, a blog over on the New York Times lays claimed that Apple was indeed working on some sort of mobile internet device, going as far to say that it’s a netbook (but later hedging on it being an upgraded iPhone or NetMac). The source of the information was an unnamed search engine provider that supposedly “spotted Web visits from an unannounced Apple product with a display somewhere between an iPhone and a MacBook.”

Steve Jobs said during call that Apple will use its resources creatively to steal market share from its competitors, so new products are always a possibility.

I wonder how much money will be spent on shiny plastic in this supposedly affordable netbook.
