Best Buy, Future Shop Accidentally Sold Fake iPad 2s in Canada

- By - Source : CTV BC

A $600 piece of clay? Sounds like a great deal.

There's nothing nicer than rushing home with a new gadget, tearing open the box and inhaling that sweet new gadget smell. Similarly, there's nothing worse than discovering your new toy is broken or there's a part missing and being forced to pack everything back up and return to the store. Sadly, for as many as 24 Canadians, that's what happened when they purchased their iPad 2s.

CTV News reports that Best Buy and Future Shop have announced the launch of a major fraud investigation after as many as 10 customers opened up their new iPad 2 box to find a bag of clay. Walmart and London Drugs have also confirmed incidences of clay iPad 2s being sold to as many as 14 customers. Future Shop told CTV that the company believed scammers purchased the iPad 2s, and replaced them with clay before repackaging everything and returning the fake tablet to the store. The re-packaged tablets, which the scammers had shrink-wrapped before returning, were then put back on shelves and later sold to other customers.

According to CTV, London Drugs, FutureShop and Best Buy have all changed their return policy on wrapped tablet computers as a result of fraud. The stores now require the customer to wait while the box is opened to ensure all components are present. Walmart said that while it is upset by the scam, it won't be changing policies at this time.

until they get busted, the scammers are kinda stupid. I live in Canada, when you return something the take down all your information and stuff etc. just in case this kinda stuff happens. I had to show drivers license to prove my ID when returning a $400 tv

^future shop is our main overpriced/pushy-salesman computer store up here in the cold north. Bestbuy is almost as big now and just as overpriced but the salesmen don't work on commission.

That's because you can return ANYTHING at Walmart. No discrimination charges there..

LOL... they paid the price for the fruity box. Guys, that IS the actual price for the fruity box. The device is extra, if you still want it. ROFL.

At least a lump of clay is useful for some things, unlike the box's original content.

No love for scammers (including Media moguls, Hollywood - SOPA) - but such tactics is not new, but so many is a group or a few guys.

I remember a scammer screwing himself about 10 years ago. A kid came onto the Nvidia newsgroup who was confused as to WHY the GeForce 5200 he bought from BB/Walmart said it was a GeForce 4200 on the POST screen / drivers. We quickly figured out that some jerk did a bate and switch to do a "free upgrade".

Many people may not know or remember, but back then - the GF5200 was a SERIOUS downgrade compared to the GF4200... even the 5600 was below par. DX9 doesn't make up for the crappy performance. And worse yet, the 4200 was a $80~100 card and the much smaller 5200 was $100! 5600 was about $160.

Needless to say, we told the kid he lucked out and to keep the card. :)

A bag of clay would be more useful than an iPad

So glad you added that part. I remember all kinds of people going on about how much faster there 5200 cards are. It made me laugh and continue to use my good olde ti4200.

Wow...I wonder how those people who bought them felt when they opened the boxes.

Didn't Newegg accidentally sell fake core i7 processors a while ago?

It wasn't Newegg's fault or Future Shop's fault that this happened. It's their supplier who gave them these fakes.

it might be these people who bought the tablet, take it out and put some clay in the box then bring it back and say they got cheated. How would the retail store know it since they did not see them open it.

Wow. I thought that their return policy had change years ago when I bought that scrap metal in a Hard drive box and was told about the blocks of wood in Xbox boxes that people had bought their kids for Christmas...

so they go to a store and get a ipad and in its place there is clay.

This is not the first time Best Buy has been caught with it's pants down. I don't shop there anyway. Too many better choices.

Yeah. Basically I just go there to try things out before I buy on Amazon or Newegg. That or discover new things by wandering the aisles. I did buy an Insignia TV a while back and have been mostly satisfied.

Once back in '99 when I worked at Circuit City, some guy bought a DVD player and returned it the next day - when customer service opened the box they found a cinder block lol... the IDIOT would have gotten away with it had he not used his CREDIT CARD to purchase and return it with. If you plan to scam people, the least you can do is use CASH. Ugh!

This one was Future Shop's fault, they took the return without ever checking the contents. You never take a return without checking the contents to make sure everything is there.
