Avatar Becomes Most Successful Film Ever Made
The hit 3D movie Avatar has overtaken Titanic at the box office to become the most successful film of all time.
Avatar, directed by James Cameron has overtaken the previous owner of the title, Titanic. Also directed by Cameron, Titanic grossed $1.24 billion in the box offices around the globe. Avatar has now grossed $1.30 billion.
However, some claim that Titanic is still the king of the world (sorry, couldn't help it). The LA Times cites Bruce Nash from the-numbers.com who says domestic ticket sales for "Avatar" would have to reach $925 million in today's dollars to match, on an inflation-adjusted basis, the box office that "Titanic" achieved in 1997.
Interestingly, Avatar also hasn't beaten Titanic in the United States. While it has grossed more than Titanic worldwide, Avatar has so far grossed $554.9 million in the U.S. box office. Titanic grossed $600.7 million.

Take the dollar sign away and tell us which movie sold the most tickets. There's your #1 movie of all time.
stupid question to ask until Avatar is out of theaters. You can't figure out what has won until you can actually count all the votes/tickets.
Don't forget movie ticket cost MUCH less long time ago.
#1 so I heard is still "Gone with the Wind".
did they factor in the ass rape price of $18/ticket at Imax?
Titanic was out in theaters for more or less a year(in Puerto Rico at least). Avatar has been out in theaters for about 2 months. We just have to think for how much longer Avatar will be the king of the box office.
#1 movie of all time in both ticket sales and inflation adjusted revenue is Gone With The Wind. #2 is Star Wars. Avatar doesn't even crack the top 10.
Take the dollar sign away and tell us which movie sold the most tickets. There's your #1 movie of all time.
yeah it's the number of tickets sold that count.
You can't really compare gross amounts on movies sales of a different time. You have to go by the number of tickets sold. That's the only fair comparison. Locally ticket prices are 50% more than they were 12 years ago.
"Gone With the Wind" (as mentioned by Xenophage) is still #1 in number of tickets sold... tickets=success.
What do I think? "Frankly, my dear, I don't really give a damn!"
Let's not forget how much IMAX and 3D tickets cost with out that i dont think Avatar will be so high.
"Gone With the Wind" (as mentioned by Xenophage) is still #1 in number of tickets sold... tickets=success.
exactly. ticket prices may have quadrupled, but tickets sold is a lot better ranking to me than unbalanced amounts of money brought in. if a movie sells 5 million tickets at 5 bucks a piece, then they made 25 Million off of ticket sales.
but with movie ticket prices going through the freaking roof, (here, an adult non-matinee ticket will cost you 14 dollars) there's no point in calling any movie "the most successful".
take that example.
5 million tickets at 5 dollars apiece=25 million
2 million tickets at 14 dollars apiece=28 million
am i the only one who thinks that's a little messed up?
It's a silly question. Number of seats has this problem....if you charge less, you'll naturally sell more tickets. Inflation adjusted doesn't take into account disposable income percentages, re-releases, (in some cases) the advent of television, home movie theaters, and other, new, forms of entertainment. I used to teach statistical analysis at the University of California and (bottom line) it's really difficult to compare apples and oranges. Just enjoy the movie (or not) and quit trying to rank everything. One movie made more than a movie 10, 20, or 30 years ago. Who cares? Why the fascination and (usually inane) debate?
Another article that belongs on a different website.
and also you gotta put in cause that the population has raised.
so to calculate the geatest movie you must calculate the % of population that saw it. lol
"am i the only one who thinks that's a little messed up? "
It's all part of the hype machine. Doing it this way makes sure new movies can always be hyped as #1.
I'd like to see the source for "gone with the wind", I doubt that they would've sold more tickets at a time when the US population was at least 50% of what it is today.
Theater ticket prices haven't inflated much since 1997. I paid around 7 dollars for a movie back then and i paying 8.50 now so it isn't that much different. However The Cost of makeing a movie has gone up three times more since 1997. Avitar is a better movie than Titanic, when it's all said and done, Avitar will
be the true Winner.
Does it matter? I still fell asleep 2 watching this "masterpiece".
You can come up with any criteria to determine this. Generally however, the movie enthusiasts who follow these kind of things do not take inflation into account. If inflation was taken into account then the number one domestic gross of all times is as someone else pointed out Gone With The Wind. Titanic isnt even in the top 5. According to boxofficemojo.com anyhow. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm
The other interesting thing here is that the true metric, ticket sales, never seems to be used in this kind of discussion. At the end of the day tho, bruce nash is an idiot for using inflation as an argument when Titanic isnt even number one in that category.
Take the dollar sign away and tell us which movie sold the most tickets. There's your #1 movie of all time.
Yes and no. The number of tickets sold might tell you which movie is the more popular, but it won't tell you which one is the more succesful. The success of a movie is based on the money it made. Considering that the price of tickets are not the same everywhere, the final number might change considerably. But, yeah, that's dumb to compare gross money to a movie that was made 12 years ago. I know, let's compare it to The Jazz Singer (1927), when a movie ticket costed $0,25.
boxofficmojo has the domestic results adjusted for inflation:
1 Gone with the Wind
2 Star Wars
3 The Sound of Music
4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Uni.
5 The Ten Commandments Par.
6 Titanic
Avater ranks all the way down at #26
Avartar as it doesnt have any Celine Dion Song...

(And I am a French Canadian)
On a serious note, I seriously like Avatar a hole lot more then the Titanic... I know it was a sad fact... but I enjoy the world of fiction quite a bit more then historic stupidity.
great movie !!!!!
Gone with the Wind and Star Wars Episode 4 are the two most "popular" movies of all time in terms of ticket sales. Titanic isn't even in the top 5 and Avatar isn't even in the top 25 when you adjust domestic box office gross for inflation. Avatar has made a pretty penny worldwide but that's pretty easy to accomplish when the average cost of a ticket has gone up $7 since the 1970's.
If you weren't alive in 1977 when Star Wars: A New Hope was released ask your parents about it. People saw it over and over and over again. Dozens of times. People who didn't even like the movie would go see it again because of how visually stunning it was. Avatar was a good movie but I wouldn't pay to see it again, at least not the $8+ that 3d cinema's want to charge. The story really isn't that original people.
money needs to play a factor....its easy to sell tons of tickets when they dont cost much. a movie able to get people to pay $15 or more to get a ticket should get credit for doing that. and the movies still going strong so its a little early to debate numbers
JACK!!! JACK!!! PLEASE DON'T GO!!! JACK!!! JACK!!!!....... HAHAHAHAHA!!!
Too bad sharks didn't come and eat him.
(this is no offense to the real victims, this is directed at Dicaprio)
avatar would probably be number one if it wasnt for piracy./sarcasm I mean think about it. Isnt 1.6billion dollars a little on the low side for what a movie should bring in?/ more sarcasm.
Thing is if Hollywood would quit making crap movies people would spend money. Also I am not spending 18 bucks to watch the movie in the theatre, and then drop another 30 bucks on the blueray. If I pirate I get a file I can play on pc, tv, and mobile. Adjust you distribution channel.

Oh boy. Do you know why the tickets didn't cost much? Because the dollar had much more value 30 years ago than it did now. Sure a movie ticket seems cheap but so was everything else because you made less money. $60,000 a year now is a decent amount of money for a single person to be making in 2010 but in 1970 $60,000 a year made you a very wealthy person.
Avartar as it doesnt have any Celine Dion Song...(And I am a French Canadian)On a serious note, I seriously like Avatar a hole lot more then the Titanic... I know it was a sad fact... but I enjoy the world of fiction quite a bit more then historic stupidity.
+1. I'm also french canadian and I'm glad more than half the United States thinks she's american!
Also, the only thing historical in Titanic is that the ship sinks. Oops, guess I should have wrote *** SPOILER ALERT *** ?
Not enough T & A in the movie. Just kidding. Avatar is/was a good movie in its own right. Titanic is also a great movie. Much better than Dude Where's My Car.
Does it matter? I still fell asleep 2 watching this "masterpiece".
I was bored too, there was no point in the movie where I didn't know what was going to happen next.
Also... unobtanium... really? They couldn't think up anything better? The plot was just garbage in this movie.
