Outlook-compatable phones for VZ?

Hi,

I am looking for a phone that offers PDA-like functionality, like the
Samsung i600, that is compatible with the VZW network and syncs with
Outlook. I have been looking at the i600, but frankly concerned about the
ver 2002 software based on a number of postings and a lack of info on a
transition strategy to get it to 2003 (or 2004?).

I do not care about email syncing - I just want to be able to sync my
Outlook Calendar and Contacts to my phone. A co-worker showed me a Motorola
V400 that he uses on Cingular that seems to do this. What phones does VZW
support that would do this?

I went to the local VZW store (one of their own stores, not a franchise) and
the guy there really had no clue. He showed me some software for phone book
management, but he was really just grabbing at anything he could find.

Can anyone help with some suggestions? Thanks, Keith

You can get commercial software that will sync contacts and calendar
with Outlook for almost any phone. An example of such an app is
DataPilot.

I do strongly recommend you examine what the phone does for the
calendaring and contacts.

As one example, the Audiovox CDM8900 only allows 3 user editable
groups (aka categories) and has 5 fixed number types. (That means
for example you can't have a home2 unless you stick the number
in another field such as the one labelled fax). The calendar
is a joke, basically being a list of meetings. There is no
facility for repeats.

As another example, the LG phones have 5 number spaces, any
one of which can be of 10 different types (eg home, work, home2).
The calendar does have repeats, but you can't set the end date
via the phone UI. You can have exceptions (eg if one instance
of a repeating event is cancelled or changed).
