Side button on 4400 keeps getting pushed by accident while cover is
closed, putting phone into a vibrate of silent mode. any way of
defeating this function and using only the star key for the privacy
modes?

I've not found a way and it is the only thing I really HATE about the
phone.

After a year, I've learned to be very careful about how I hold it and
now I only goof on an average of once a week :)

Here's what I did with one of our vx4400's.

I got some good quality super glue, the type with the pin despenser, and I
very carfully put a very small amount of glue around the edge of the button,
and let it fully dry over night.

Now the button is harder to push down, have not had the problem with that
phone since.
