Treo 600 swap SIM from 6340i - need to register? It works...

I got a used 600 from a friend and put my SIM in the phone and it worked. My
plan supposedly doesn't "support" GSM but I made and recieved calls
successfully.

What are the pros and cons about using the phone (formerly same Cingular
area as well)?

Will certain services be restricted?

Will it screw up my grandfathered multi-phone plan if I add web or ME
services online?

Thanks

If you have a SIM card, then you have GSM. The services you will lose is
the analog that you were able to get with the 6340i, and the TDMA part.
6340i gets GSM, TDMA, and analog (AMPS), but the Treo 600 only gets GSM
or CDMA but not both (depends on specific model).
So it sounds like you have the GSM model, and will lose TDMA and AMPS.
You should also be able to get GPRS.

If you have a SIM then you have a GSM plan, because TDMA doesn't use a SIM.

He actually has a GAIT plan if he had a Nokia 6340.

The only problems he MIGHT run into (and this just educated guessing)
is that when roaming in a few markets, the SIM might expect him to
roam on a particular TDMA or analog carrier and lock out other
carriers (including GSM carriers). This wouldn't be a problem with
the 6340i (800/1900 AMPS/TDMA/GSM) but could strand him w/o service on
a Treo.

I'd keep the 6340 in the glovebox as a backup just in case...

Fair point, although the 6340/6340i can also be used on a GSM plan.

Thanks for all the help. I've tried using web services but find that I can
only use the Cingular CSD dialup. The other has an authentication error so I
believe it's because it's not part of my service features signed up for...

The hardware seems to have some issues with noise and buzz when others call
or get called. It's still under warranty so I may send it back for eval.

Thanks Again,

Dick
