Options when traveling to Tahiti

Hello!

We are going to be traveling to Tahiti later this year and I would like to
know if there is a phone or carrier I can use there. I have Verizon with a
tri-mode CDMA phone and my wife has Sprint with a tri-mode CDMA phone. I
assume Tahiti uses GSM as do most non-US countries.

What are my options?

Realizing how many American tourists bring their cell phones along on their
international travels, CDMA providers have some options for cell phone
useage with phones where there are no roaming arrangements. In Peru for
example, Verizon CDMA phones can be used for outgoing calls only on the Bell
South network by dialing *165 and using a credit card or prepaid calling
card. It doesn't work for incoming calls and remains a very expensive
option.

I have tried several options and have found that renting a cell phone with
prepaid service once I arrive overseas is usually the least expensive
option. They are, by and large, GSM phones. Usually they can be rented in
or near International Airports.

Verizon does offer limited overpriced roaming in Mexico and the Dominican
Republic, and to a lesser extent through reciprocal agreements in South
Korea and New Zealand.

Your best bet would be to purchase an unlocked GSM phone with 900/1800,
or a Tri-Band World Phone. Once you have the phone, you could buy a
prepaid SIM to use with it. Ebay is good place to look.

If you buy a Nokia GSM phone and know who it's locked to, you can most
likely unlock it with some help from http://www.nokiafree.org/

Good luck.
