SCP 5300 Reboots Itself!

I've got this phone for about 2 years now and have gotten quite
frustrated at retyping my e-mails and on-line sites due to it
rebooting/restarting by itself. I've called sprint about it and they
just for me to do an update(which didn't change a thing). I'm about
ready to get another phone with the upgrade rebate, or with my
protection plan if there is something wrong with the phone. Any
sugestions?

Fred, I've got a 5300 as well and mine is 27 months old. I've noticed that
I'll have a reboot after doing quite a bit of Vision surfing on the web.
Might be that the cache has gotten too big, and the phone needs to
clear/dump it. Might be you need to update the firmware on the phone.

You can check your settings though to see if you are up to date @

If you find that your firmware version is below 1.038, you should take your
phone into your local SPCS store to get it updated. The current PRL is
10025, and supposedly a new one is coming on line today 10026.

Thanks Bob! I did something the techs told me to update, but don't
know if it's firmware(maybe local cell station remapping). Just got a
usb data cable for it so I can transfer it's data...but don't have the
software for it. Is Smart Sync the leading app for this purpose?

Mahalo,
Fred

Hey Fred, you seem to be a bit confused on three fronts here :).

First off, the firmware is the programming to tell the phone how to work and
do all those nifty things like making calls, calendar functions and
everything else.

This can not be updated OTA, (Over the Air). If your firmware version is
lower than 1.038, you should take your phone to the SPCS store, as that is
the *only* place to where get your phone updated.

Secondly, if you did an OTA update, it was only on the PRL, which is a small
bit of coding that tells your phone who to use, SPCS or a roaming partner,
to make & receive calls.

Last, but not least, you mention using a USB cable to connect to your
laptop. That's used to 1) connect to Vision and surf on your laptop, or 3)
to sync your laptop with your phone, using one of three different software
providers, located at:

www.futuredial.com or
www.susteen.com or
www.bitpim.org .

The first two listings charge for their programming and Bitpim is in
development, but its free. For some reason, I've only been able to get
version 7.15 to work on my 5300 to sync my phone book. All versions after
that, and I have a problem.

I haven't tried any of Futuredial's products, or Susteens.

I was having a similar problem. I took it to a Sprint Store for an update.
They told me that although it was up to date in terms of firmware it failed
some kind of diagnostic. I waited a couple days and they gave me a new one.
This phone was about a year and a half (?) old so it was out of warranty.
Not sure why they were so good about it.

I'm glad they helped you, but it sounds like someone forgot to check out
the warranty dates. I wouldn't expect that to happen again.

Thanks All!

Now I have a much clearer understanding of the terms and have found
out that my firmware version is 1.035. I'm planning to go to the
sprint store and get this updated. I have the extended protection
plan, so I hope not to have to use my super bowl winnings to resolve
any findings! I still would hate to have to manually re-enter all my
data, so the sync software will be considered in this trip.
