two months ago I switched over from a cdma carrier because I needed to have
the ability to buy a SIM card when I went overseas for business trips to
save money. after purchasing a unlocked phone I was ready to enjoy the
heavily toted cingular network that promised more coverage.

I live in the Atlanta area - the headquarter of cingular - and the coverage
is dismal - the cdma carrier that I had previously not only had better
coverage in the Atlanta metro area but on a national basis - had far better
infrastructure and customer service than cingular.

there technical people tell me that I have to turn my phone on an off all
the time in order to get the most performance out of the network. how lame

If cingular would live up to its more bars in more places - they could be
taken seriously - however the truth is

What kind of unlocked phone did you purchase? If you purchased a
900/1800/1900 phone rather than a 850/1800/1900 phone that may be part
of your problem. cingular heavily uses 850 and if you don't have 850
you may be losing out on a good deal of coverage provided with the 850
Mhz reception. 1900 Mhz only may work marginally but for the best
reception on cingular you need to have a handset capable of 850 as
well as 1900.

If Cingular doesn't work where you live then switch back to your CDMA
carrier and buy a pre-paid SIM/phone package over there for when you travel.

That's what several friends of mine have done and it works just fine.
